Icon5 WTF? Ground Control sleeves not fitting? Help!!

OK so for my 97 base, I just bought a set of ground control coilovers to match up with the brand new set of tokico illuminas I have. I ordered the coilovers directly from ground controls website.

The Problem: There is a slotted insert that goes over the shock. Then the sleeve is to slide over that for a snug fit. BUT, it comes no where close to fitting. I measured the difference between the outter diameter of the stock shock and the illuminas. Turns out the illuminas are 0.1" thicker in diameter. SO... wtf? When I placed the order I made sure to order the coilovers made for illuminas. In fact, they are suppose to work with stock and AGX's too.

The sleeves and inserts fit perfect on the stock shocks... but I wanna use my illuminas

Anyone got any ideas what is going on? Are there different generations of illuminas?

ill try and get some pics later

Anyone else with GC and illuminas ... did you have this problem too?

I don't have that set up but I am a Tooling and Fixture Technician and deal with tolorences quite a bit. One tenth is a bit most of my stuff I deal with have a tolorence of .005 That would be a good thing to find out if they have a discontinued line of illuminas or vice versa on the GC coilovers. Is that sloted insert painted or anything? You could probably take the insert to a machine shop and have them hone it a couple .001. Find out how much you'll need to clear the inserts and have the machine shop hone it about .005 over. If that would give you the clearance you need I have no idea because of paint and other problems and thicknesses are an issue. How thin are the inserts?

I agree... I have a feeling its not a manufacturing error... I think they just sent the wrong insert. Its not metal... maybe teflon. Some type of soft plastic or hard rubber. Its purpose is to center the sleeve and probably prevent squeeking. Its somewhere between 0.1" and 0.2" thick. Ill get some pictures up once I find my camera. I just moved and havn't unpacked everything yet.

I know illuminas will work on Ground Controls, beacuse thats the setup i have.

I bought them used from a guy on prelude power and he had them on his 5th gen.

when I got them they were already assembled so I couldn't help you with how to put them together but I know they should work.

Re: WTF? Ground Control sleeves not fitting? Help!!

i know they should work... but they don't haha. I talked to the ground control people (which btw has AMAZING customer service!) and they have sent me a pack of different sized spacers and orings to correct the problem. We have come to the conclusion that they originally sent the wrong spacers or there are 2 generations of illuminas. But im squared away now and waiting until the next time I head home to install them. Im thrilled to get my illuminas on!!

And if anyone is doubting ground control... i was blown away by their customer service. It started out as a few emails and then they called me to talk even more about the problem. Great people.... at least from my experience.

thanks to all who helped

Re: WTF? Ground Control sleeves not fitting? Help!!

riding around today, my first day with the tokicos and ground controls. on the prelude

i'm ****ing blown away.

My s2000 rides like theres no suspension at all. and all it has is a 1.5" drop with springs (stock shocks)

I'm DEFINITLY getting a set of tokico's (or koni's) with some ground controls for it soon.

I just can't express how blown away I am with the ride with as much of a drop is that I have. its like everything is stock.
