Hard to Shift in the morning

53k '01 SH

These past few days I've been having trouble getting the car into 1st - I really have to force it in there. After driving for like 15 min, everything will be fine and smooth. This definately has something to do with the cold because it only started happening these past few days when the mornings have just started getting cold. However just today, and whats got me concerned, I was trying to get it into 3rd and it didn't go in, but it was just that once.

Also, I bought the car used last winter and the shifts although a lil notchy never did I have to really force it into first like i felt like i've had to do now.

Also, I'm definately pushing the clutch all the way in. So for now, what I've been doing is if i force it and it still won't go in I clutch out and clutch in try again.

So I'm thinking, and hoping, only a MTF change is necessary (this is the same as gearbox oil right?).

However, could something worn out with the clutch also cause this.

Hopefully I can fix this problem before it REALLY starts to get cold.

I am also going to try and warm up my car tomorrow morning and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks.

Re: Hard to Shift in the morning

I have always noticed with my 5th that sometimes it feels like the gears aren't meshing just right and it feels kinda rough getting into first.

Maybe your clutch is going bad, which would cause the forcing of gears.

Do you also experience grinding or slipping at all?

Re: Hard to Shift in the morning

No grinding or slipping. And clutch really doesn't feel any different in the morning.

After driving the car for like 15 min, its perfectly fine. But is it still possible the clutch is going bad and it only shows in the cold?

Re: Hard to Shift in the morning

the clutch pedal feeling different wouldnt have to do with the gears not going together, the clutch pedal would be messed up if your fluid levels were messed up. Also - IF your clutch was going bad, you would most likely experience a loss of fluid like I did, because the clutch needs extra help to shift. You would experience clutch pedal drop and then have to bleed the system.

Your problem honestly just sounds weird, but it sounds like the cold weather or the cold starting is making the gears act funny. Have you tried starting the car, letting it sit for 20 minutes, and then driving it? Does it do the same thing if the car is at full operating temperature?

Re: Hard to Shift in the morning

ok...so its probably unlikely to be a clutch issue *knock on wood* which makes me feel a little better...I will try starting up the car and letting it sit tomorrow.

Clutch pedal and clutch are kinda the same, lol, but judging by your complaints I would say that this probably isnt it. Gears and clutch pedal - those are different. I would say - try the 20 minute thing. Start your car, let it run for 20 minutes on a cold morning, and see if it still does it.

Mine does this in first gear only, and yes, letting the clutch pedal out a little bit to let it mildly engage allows the gears to slip into place.

I wouldn't go as far to say there is nothing wrong quite yet, only because he said there was other gears involved until it warms up.

I hate to be the pessimistic one, but it's always better to just wait and see what develops rather then get ahead of yourself.

Also - i forgot about reverse, lol, mine does that too sometimes.

I say just wait until tomorrow and see what it brings, until them, don't worry about a thing, if it still works and runs for you, then clearly it isn't life threatening as of now.

Good luck!

Re: Hard to Shift in the morning

Since it only seems to happen when it's cold I would think it's just the trans fluid is still at highest viscosity. When all is warmed up the shifts slot in nicely yeh? All the fluid is warm and at running viscosity. Plenty normal.

Which is why I said to let it warm up for a good 20 minutes, let the fluids get to normal operating temperature and THEN give it a shot.

Also - take a look at his first post - 53k miles - I HIGHLY doubt anything is going wrong with his clutch or any of that unless he beats the living sh!t out of his car and doesn't know how to drive a 5 speed

Or the clutch from the factory was put in horribly and someone along the line messed it up...

Re: Hard to Shift in the morning

SIR...I WILL GIVE YOU ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS AS A BET THAT IT IS YOUR CLUTCH. NO MAKE THAT 200 DOLLARS AND I WOULD GO MORE IF ONLY I HAD MORE MONEY. The very same problem happened to me untill I was forced to go to the mechanic and spend 1400 dollars on my sunfire GT...here are the symptoms:

1) you wake up one day, and try to reverse her....she doesn't want to do that ..so you engage 1st gear and then try reversing..it works...you think you are a geneous!
2) a few weeks later...first gear enagement becomes hard...you let the pedal in and out a few times( hoping the light would turn green a bit later than usual...) Success...again you think you are a geneous...
3) a few more weeks pass by...now engaging 2nd gear is getting harder...you have to use alll the muscle power you have( and you thank yourself for filling your shirt up!)..but it works...
4) Still a few more weeks later one day doing 70 kmph on teh freeway you are unable to DOWN SHIFT into 2nd and have to go neutral and coast to a stop...

It was at that time that I thought weather had nothing to do with my car's worsening situation...it was me...

Take it to a transmission shop now or start saving money now( cause it looks like you are on stage 1)...

As much as I love your enthusiasm AND you really do know what your talking about, because I would have described this exact situation as well since it happened to me and my Prelude not 5 months ago - check his mileage bub. 53,000 miles on an original clutch is WAY too low to be having problems, unless it's an aftermarket clutch that was installed badly OR is a crappy P.O.S. clutch system....

which is also what i said to brash about 3 posts up from yours

Re: Hard to Shift in the morning

i would say its the fluids... i had the same issue in my old 89 t-bird SC. we had to put a lil thicker tranny fluid in it to help smooth the shifting cuz the syncros were goin bad. in turn when it was really cold out and was started up it didnt want to go into gear. when it was warmed up it helped but it was hard when cold.

so pretty much im just concering with brash and kaos

Re: Hard to Shift in the morning

When is every moron on the planet gonna realize that cars are MACHINES! They need to warm up before they operate the way theyre supposed to.

Like OEMKaos said...let it warm up... although I do think 20 minutes is a little excessive. Try like 5 minutes.

20 minutes a day...thats a lot of wasted fuel.

Once again...its a machine, its gonna be temperamental.

Re: Hard to Shift in the morning

Hey guys let it warm up today (for like 10 min) and everything was fine. Guess I got a little paranoid...haha.

I've been meaning to change the MTF for a while guess it would be a good time to do that now. Any one know around how much it costs to do it at a honda dealership. Don't really have the time to do it myself so if it doesn't rape my wallet to much I might just have them do it.

Thanks all again.

Any regular mechanic ought to be able to do it. No need to go to Honda cause they will rape your wallet.

Please do not go there just for a MTF fluid change...

If you cannot find the Honda MTF at a store, you can always use GM Synchromesh (I used it, works perfect)

But if you don't mind spending a lil extra, going to the Honda dealership for the MTF is a good idea. Gotta keep everything the way it came out of the factory!!!

Re: Hard to Shift in the morning

DIY is definitely do able - it all just depends on how well you feel you are at this kind of stuff. Alot of the MTF bottles have a small "nozzle" type thing, which makes it easy for you to (yes, i will say this....i don't want to...bring on the sexual innuendos...) stick it in the fill hole and squeeze the bottle to inject the fluid into the transmission

Like OEMKaos said...let it warm up... although I do think 20 minutes is a little excessive. Try like 5 minutes.

20 minutes a day...thats a lot of wasted fuel.

Once again...its a machine, its gonna be temperamental.
we aren't disagreeing with that, but it should not be acting up that badly if everything is right... if he bought it used the MTF needs to go. ASAFP

Us morons just don't want him to **** his transmission.

Re: Hard to Shift in the morning

Just changed MTF myself

Pepboys had some cool tube thing that hooks up to the top of the MTF bottle, and you can lock it so it doesn't drain out - stick it into the fill hole, unlock and in it pours.

Felt awesome in the post test drive. Will see how it acts in the cold tomorrow.

P.S Used Honda MTF. called honda they said it would cost $80, everything cost me < $25 + 1.5 hrs of work.
