Steering Wheel Controls

Does anyone know of a wheel from a different Honda that looks like the lude steering wheel that has radio controls in it. Id really like to have SWC but havent run across such a thing. Ive seen aftermarket addons but BLAH! Im not lookin for IR I have a wired SWC input on my deck. This should be a good brian picker. Not real common I believe. Im expecting Colin or 98BB6 to chime in.

Re: Steering Wheel Controls

you can mod your own steering wheel if you get the control panel from a CRV (i've looked into this before)

part no's: NH167L (buttons) and NH455L (finisher trim piece w/cutout for buttons)

not sure if this is what you want but hope it helps

Re: Steering Wheel Controls

OOOO!! The 98-02 Accords have the same wheel as a 5th gen lude, and the ex has SWC....right? Hmmm. Ill have to check into this more. Part of the problem would be adding on the wires into the column and to the wheel. Im itching for some controls. Ive thought about modding the cruise control to doing volume up and down and next track. But I use my cruise some times. CRV huh? Ive got a buddy that works at the Honda dealership. Ill have him do some checking.

Re: Steering Wheel Controls

He thinks you'll need a full column swap to get the wires passed the where the wheel turns. Im working on a new project. Gonna try and get into the shop to check it out. Im gonna interupt the cruise control wires with a relay. Since I rarely use the cc Ill make 87a go to the swc interface. When I pust the cc button on the dash it will open the relay and send the controls to the cc module.

Re: Steering Wheel Controls

Alright everybody....er, uh, Bill... and anyone else who is freakish about doing stuff not everyone can do. Sooo I pulled the column cover off. I was pretty bummed to see that there are 2 wires for cc control. I was hoping one like most swcs are but hey, its cc after all. So anyway. There are 3 wires in the column, red/blue, lt green/black, lt green/red. The 2 light greens are the control wires and the other being swithced power. So what the objective here is to get 1 input into the swc module (in my case will be a SWI-JACK from PAC). that has different voltages varying from .1-5v depending on the buttons pushed.

Easy enough. What I do is break the wires, literally cut them, and send the output into term 30 on a relay for each wire. Since I want the swc when the relay is at rest I will hook the input to the cc on term 87 for each wire. When the relay is energized it cc will fuction as normal.

Heres the funky part. 87a wil be the inputs to the interface. Since currently they are just 12v signals I need to drop it down to a usable level with resistors (haven't played with them yet to find out what works well) and since these wires will be connected and we don't want to feedback into the wheel they will have to be diode isolated. Then fed into the swc interface and programed. Heat will not be an issue with the resistors, unless you plan on holding the button for minutes or hours. I have relay controls on my head unit so from any screen I can tap EXT SW and then a button that I can label Cruise Control. Tap that it will send a latched signal to the relay allowing cruise control function until I tap it again, relay de-energizes and I have my volume up and down again. Pretty sweet!

Ill edit the post with specifics when I actually do it but Bill seemed interested which made me feel wanted and by thinking through it enough to write it down helps me think of things, like the diodes. Heres some reading to ponder Bill!

Re: Steering Wheel Controls

Cool deal guys thanks for the props. I may work on it tomorrow. At least get the r values figured out and some relays. It really is simple guys the biggest problem is getting a h/u with wired remote input that a PAC interface will work with. SWI-JACK is a great product. Did 3 last week alone.

Re: Steering Wheel Controls

I got a pretty ****ty pic didn't turn out very good with the lighting. Ill take a pic with the relay set up and all the wires when I do it. It will make sense...well kinda like a coloring book, could't draw it on your own but you can fill in the lines.

eager to see it...

i'm still searching for an ap1 steering wheel. i love this mod but i really think i'm more interested in the sex appeal. especially since my deck is touch screen.

but... if this turns out how i have a feeling it will and i imagine your skills will allow i just may attempt it myself.

is this mod DIY worthy??

Re: Steering Wheel Controls

I will do what I can to get good pics and good description on how to do the mod with part numbers and everything. I can probably do a DIY. Fairly inexpensive too. It should turn out about $75 at retail price.
