Icon5 Good Questions

Ok guys well i was looking into different things that could be removed from the engine bay and still leave the car driveable. things that i am thinking about are

ABS? Any ideas or anything would be nice..
P/S all of it..not looping lines..removing it 100%.

and if anyone has ideas of what i can remove but still leave drivable tell me..

AND I DON'T WANNA SEE ANYONE POST JUST LEAVE IT IN THERE...OR YOU NEED IT..BECAUSE I KNOW FOR FACT YOU DON'T NEED THEM..THEY ARE LUXURY.

i'd like to know the same thing. understandable if you are gonna make it a track car. but otherwise the weight reduction is so minimal. do tell us why you wish to remove these...

Re: Good Questions

You can take out the ABS but youre going to need a scan tool.. please for the love of god dont just take it off.. the high pressure reservoir in that thing is running at A LOT of psi and I guarantee it will hurt if not break something or kill you.

Re: Good Questions

I agree that the ABS is a luxury, and they're a little frustrating for.. ahem.. snow drifting, but they're also useful in an emergency.

I nearly lost control of my car because some prick in an accord went into a turn lane and then jumped back into the straight lane without checking for cars or signaling, and ABS controlled that skid.

Re: Good Questions

Yeah, I was thinking about taking out my A/C, because the damn thing doesn't work, and I don't need it, but I'd keep ABS, it's saved my ass a few times.

I have a friend with an Accord, and I can tell you for sure that when he slams his brakes he doesn't have much control of where he's going, without pumping them, and that's just ABS anyway :P

Re: Good Questions

I'm going to have to disagree. ABS is not luxury at all but rather safety. I can see how most people think its a luxury item since it was first available standard in higher end luxury cars.
That's like saying the SRS is luxury. again the SRS was first seen and offered in higher end luxury cars but has since become a standard requirement for all autos.
Something strictly defined as luxury is made to be an improvement to the cars rating for creature comfort. In no way does the ABS improve my comfort. My butt does not feel more coazy since I have ABS more does my ride quality improve because I have ABS.
And as another note the ABS is only engaged when the driver starts to lock the wheels under braking. Which is a fantastic thing.
With the way people drive (or lack there of) we need the car to say "whoa nelly to much brake pedal" and control the deceleration.
What's the point in taking the ABS off anyway, your just going to make your less safe, lower its resale value, and possibly seriously injury ur brake system.
Not only that but with most newer model cars the proportioning valves in ur brake system are implemented into the ABS valves to save space.
So you may be removing some things you really shouldn't be. And for what end? Its not like the ABS weighs a a ton.
If you want a weight reduction call jenny craig not ur ABS.
But anyway the point I was trying to make is that a lot of advances in safety get confused to be luxury because they are first available in high end luxury cars. If you want to know the standard safety features of cars 5 years from now look at what the high end luxury cars use today.
Power steering is a luxury, airbags are not, air conditioning is a luxury, ABS is not. POWER boosted brakes are a luxury but your brakes themselves are not. Heat is a luxury but seatbelts are not.

My opinion if you want a weight reduction and ur going to remove ur ABS go ahead an take ur windows out too. Those keep high speed air off of you and that's luxury.

Re: Good Questions

Well yeah, they're not a luxury, and you're right, they don't exactly weigh anything mentionable.

And again, they saved my ass the other day when that Accord decided he was in a hurry, but whatever.
I don't like ABS, but I'd never remove it. I don't like having my windows up on the highway either, but I'd never remove them.

It's pretty much up to the owner, and if you're careful and you know what you're doing there's not much chance of damaging your braking system when removing the ABS unit and everything that goes with it.

I guess the word "luxury" was a poor choice, but they're a feature that drivers have done without for MILLIONS OF YEARS, SINCE THE AGE OF DINOSAURS. (haha..)

Seriously, though, I'd keep them. They're safer, you have better skid control, and I'm pretty sure insurance goes through the roof without them, so who knows.
