Questions questions

Ready for this one guys?
Rims:
I finally found a pair of shoes i want to work towards for...Enkei Em5.
Anyway heres the question

$1377 18 x 7.5 for 4 rims & tires. or
$1200 17 x 7.5 for 4 rims & tires.

Header & Cat.
Right now i don't want to work on the engine, but my headers are RUSSSSSSSTed, and my cat is completely gone, you can hear i guess the honeycomb or whatever it is shaking in there.
So..is the $60 combo thing good from ebay? OR should i worry about something?

Brakes:
is it worth those hugeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee brembo big brake kits? or wildwood big brake kits? Or are the oem, rotors and calipers good enough for me and w.e rims i get?

And lastly.......how are the light output on these?

Re: Questions questions

Bigger rims = bigger tires = expensive tires.

I suggest you take care of your header problem and catalytic converter problem first. Fashion takes a backseat in my book if your engine needs attention. Ebay seems attractive b/c it's cheaper, but in the long run, those no-name ebay product(s) are not worth it. You pay for what you get for and $60 bucks for a header and cat combo is suspect...

-Brakes, just get new rotors/calipers/pads. No need to upgrade to Wilwood brakes if you're not gonna use them - ie. race.

Re: Questions questions

I think 18's look phenomenal on a prelude if done right, but like B said bigger wheels is more money.

You def need to replace the cat and header, you said it was what $60? Thats not bad at all so snap too son!

As far as brakes go, unless you romp on the brake pedal ever time you come to a stop or just have sudden bursts of coming to an abrupt stop on the highway I say the big brake kit isnt needed.

Re: Questions questions

Stick with 17" rims. 18" tires come in very few sizes from very few manufacturers and cost 30% more than the same tire in 17" in most cases...not to mention you loose performance and handling with rims that large...17" is a good compromise (looks/performance).

If you want headlights that perform better than stock...those are NOT it. All those give you is a poor projector cutoff pattern, no more light than stock. Unfortunately retrofitting HID projectors is the only real way you can upgrade the lighting of the Prelude and really see the difference.

why do you need a big brake kit? Unless you run track it's not going to be utilized anyway...the stock brakes have plenty of stopping power...enough to trip the ABS on dry pavement...you can't brake harder than that.

Re: Questions questions

I had 18" rims on my Prelude when I first got it, and there were a few issues I had. One, and the biggest problem in my eyes, was the fact that the ride was alot less smooth and not as comfortable. You can still get a stellar look with a 17" rim and not sacrifice the comfort and ride of the car. Second was that my car was lowered and it constantly rubbed and cause problems with the tires and wear and all other things.

I have to agree with B here, but not when it comes to Catalytic converters. An eBay cat will work perfectly fine, but the header is something that I wouldn't get thru eBay, just b/c they are cheaper doesn't mean they are good, they are probably crap.

Re: Questions questions

or if you don't want to get an ebay "cat" test pipe, you can get a nice high flow metal substrate that doesn't hate the environment quite as much... I suggest the round one, prob 2.5"

Re: Questions questions

Well figured I would throw my .02 in.

1. to start, I would just start with the header and cat. $60 is really cheap, and I myself, would not trust the source.
2. With the rims, you're actually going to lose performance by going with 18's, and your ride will suffer. 17's are really as large as I would ever go.
3. Upgrading your brakes shouldn't be a priority unless you hit the auto cross track. Sure the extra stopping power may be nice, but is definitely not needed. Pointless IMO unless they are going to use. And unless your going 20" or bigger (which you cant or should NEVER do on a prelude) than an upgrade in brakes is not needed for an upgrade in rim size.

And honestly I'm not sure about the headlights. They do look great though. Remember though at the end of the day your car looks great, but wont move(obviously yours is just a few exhaust pieces but you get the idea), what good is it ? Fix the problems under the hood, then go for cosmetics. Again just my .02

PS. its Wilwood not wildwood you wouldnt happen to be from jersey or the surrounding area would you?

Re: Questions questions

lmaoo i prolly had wildwood in my head nah im in ny, but yeah im def gettin the head and cat first, i wanted to get new rims because either way i need new tires soon so i figured i'd get a near pair anyway. i know i'd lose performance with 18's, but then again i don't wanna race, and if i do i figured i just swap in the 16's every now and then, but would i need a camber kit for the rims?

Re: Questions questions

If your planning on rockin the 18's for shows only or just for showin off the ride and not for everyday use and driving, then I would say go for it! But the comfort and ride you lose with the 18's is definitely the biggest factor, which is why it would be awesome to rock them for shows, maybe some cruises, but for daily driving, throw the 16's on there and rock the stockies!!

Re: Questions questions

i agree with the majority of the replies here...
address the engine issues first. get the cat and header issue taken care of. but if the header performs alright with no performance issues, i.e. cracks, leaks, you could just paint your heat shield like me and emerson and lots of other luders do. check out this link and my pics below
Cheap Alternative to Shiny Headers

BEFORE

AFTER

also if the CAT is that fukked i have a OBX R test pipe for sale if you want it, just let me know.

now as for your wheels, 18's are sexy but not practical for a daily driver at all. i would go for 17's, you'll have so many more tire options, save on weight, and most importantly save a ton of money that can be put into other things your car may crave.
