What Oil?

Being the new owner recently, id like to treat my lude the way i want it treated. annnd not knowing how long ago the last owner changed the oil on it, id like to do so, just wondering what oil everyone recomends here on a 90,000 mile engine.

Re: What Oil?

I use to run 5w-30 because that's what the car calls for, but about a year ago I switched to 10w-30 and it stopped burning oil and overall seemed to perform better. I also throw in Lucas oil stabilizer every once in a while. When I get a car I usually get the cheapest oil, in this case 10w-30, and an oil filter and do the change, drive it for about 500 miles and then change to a higher quality oil, as a way to flush the system without using one of those crappy flushes that ultimately breakdown the old and new oil. I use dinosaur oil just because I'm going to change every 3000 miles regardless of whether it's dyno/blend/synth.

Re: What Oil?

I have around 144K on mine, but I have only owned it for about 7K of those miles. And I have changed my oil already three times and I am about to change it again. This car is in great shape, besides the recent clutch burning incident. Just an excuse to get a stage 2 w/ a 8 lb flywheel

But seriously, I usually use what is on sale at Auto Zone I usually use 10W40. might cut back to 10W30 in the winter sometimes but our winters are mild so I most the time stay with 10W40. I would use the 5W30 but my Lude has a few more miles than most. You said you were at 90K so I would use what the owner's manual calls for and I think xiayu says thats 5W30.

Re: What Oil?

use 10-30w, I use it and I'm in florida. 5w-40 is more for if your car going into less than 20 degrees farenheit (around there not sure)

Re: What Oil?

Pennzoil High Milage 5-30. Or royal purple like mentioned before.

The high milage can prevent and stop leaks. If you have the money I would say go with royal purple though.

Re: What Oil?

Try to treat your car with some synthetic and oil treatment. Since you just got it you should also check your other fluids, just in case you need some changing.

Re: What Oil?

5 w 30 in the winter

"Well, we should first tell you what the multi-viscosity numbers mean. 10W30 means that the oil acts like a thinner, 10-weight oil when it's cold and like a thicker, 30-weight oil when it's hot. "

Im thinkin 10w30 AMS oil will work pretty much all year, how often do you guys think a full synthetic oil like AMS oil should be changed?

Re: What Oil?

not to be a smart ass, and not just because I like to revive old threads... but...

5w30, 10w30..

isn't the first number a measure of the "winter" or cold viscosity, whereas the 30 in both is the working weight... so at running temp aren't they the same? please explain if I am wrong, I like to learn... I use royal purple 5w30 at the moment.

Re: What Oil?

^ lol, I would love to stand corrected if I am wrong... I did pose a QUESTION?????

now... it isn't too late for me to edit before brash smells it, right?

edit: okay, so I am reading... and though it seems maybe it is better to use an oil with fewer polymers (less range) i.e. 10w30 being "better" than 5w30, I fail to see what was incorrect in my statement... and the 5w will obviously flow faster on startup causing less wear... I would love some clarification... in addition to the bob guy, I went here:
http://www.performancemotoroil.com/i...motor_oil.html
http://www.upmpg.com/tech_articles/motoroil_viscosity/

"I can't tell you how many times I have heard someone, usually an auto mechanic, say that they wouldn't use a 5W-30 motor oil because it is, "Too thin." Then they may use a 10W-30 or SAE 30 motor oil. At engine operating temperatures these oils are the same. The only time the 5W-30 oil is "thin" is at cold start up conditions where you need it to be "thin.""

seems like a good source? what am I missing?

Why? I wouldn't ban someone for using Royal Purple...

Good links bdizzle. The other one I reccommend having a read of is www.bobistheoilguy.com I think it is.
