car died at idle would not restart, honda dealership does not know whats wrong

Its a 2000 base. Sitting at a turn light yesterday, and the car just died on me. It would turn over like it wanted to start, but it wouldn't. Tried jumping it and got nothing (knew it wasn't the battery). Then I played with priming the fuel pump by turning the ignition to the on position, then off, then tried to start it and it cranked. I got in and started driving and it was hesitating big time when I would hit the gas, and then it just died again about a mile down the road. Had it toed to a honda dealership whom spent 2 hours on it already, and they are asking for 2 more hours because they still don't know what the problem is. It was the night crew whom worked on it, so I have to wait until 3:30pm today to get anymore info. All I know is that they check the fuel pump (as per my request), and its functioning properly. What could it be. I figured it was a clogged fuel filter that eventually burnt out the fuel pump. Could their test of the fuel pump come back that its working when its not working properly? I don't even know how they test that. I don't know if they checked the fuel pressure up by the rail to see if the filter is clogged, I will make sure of that when the mechanics that worked on it get in. Anybody has any insight to what it may be, please help.

it could be ignistion related... has this been an ongoing problem where you have had hard starts and poor MPG or is this all the sudden? there are so many things that can go wrong with a car and your really not giving us a whole lot to go off of.... Check your coil and ignition too along with fuel.
aside from that wait to see what honda says and get some more formation for diagnosis.

Okay, so I spoke with the rep, and this is what they found. The fuel pump operates properly, this is an electrical issue. There is no spark at the coil (which is an aftermarket blaster 2 coil from msd). He swapped the ignitor with a known good one. They want more time to chase basically all the wiring believing there is a short somewhere in the ignition system wiring. I mentioned my viper alarm has been acting up lately, and that my friend installed it years ago and did a hack job. I asked if they would disconnect the alarm brain and see if it started okay then. He also asked me for the genuine honda key (this one is a copy with the code put in it by honda), so they are picking the original car key from me right now to eliminate that possibility. Not sure if anyone has any insight to why I wouldn't be getting spark at the coil. I have a lot of hack wiring done in there with my vafc, msd sci igntion w/ blaster 2 coil, and most importantly the alarm which is really a hack job, I'm surprised its worked for this long. Not to mention the car was broken into a month ago and the stereo was ripped out. A bunch of bare wires, including something tapped into the ignition for my nitrous system or my radio that had arched while I was driving and blown the ignition fuze (which I replaced and the car has run fine since as well as I had everything repaired and a new stereo reinstalled working just fine for a month now). Just trying to give as much info as possible, looks like some wire chasing is gonna be in store.

wiring can be a beast of an issue. If you have hacked up half a$$ wiring that has anything to do with your ignition that would be a great place to start. You dont wnat ganked up wiring to begin with. So go through it and see what you find.
You really dont want bare wires floating around. i dont see how some bare radio wires would effect your ignition. But i do know that some viper systems to have an ignition cut off.
I guess its really do it once do right kinda scenario...
Like i said though if you have an electrical issue from something custom or hacked up on your car then your in store for $$$ or alot of cursing and beer to get it done. There are two things I hate doing on any car and thats troubleshooting electrical and exhaust ha. especially when its 100+ degrees outside.
I wish you the best of luck and dont let your buddies hack up your lude any more.

Thanks, the dealership basically told me I'd be better off with a performance shop due to all the aftermarket crap involved. I will oblige and take it to a respected place who should be able to figure it out.

well if its crap like you say why not just remove it? if things are chopped together take it out and put it back in correctly. get everything the way it should be, this way trouble shooting wont be such a pain in the future

I didn't know **** about cars when I had all that stuff put in. If I had the money, I would pay to have someone fix all that stuff, right now I do not but its on my list of things to be done. I have learned my lessons the hard way over the years.

Also - it's not just if the product is quality, and product can be half decent but if installed by the wrong person - THAT's where you get into trouble. You could buy the most expensive alarm kit w/ remote start and the works, but if you let you 17 year old nephew install it because he's "getting into this stuff and really likes it"...i think you see what I'm getting at.

They are called professionals for a reason, they are pricey, but they are the best at what they do

Don't take this personally, im not meaning to offend you at all

Believe me, I understand, I would never have a crappy shop put another part in my car again.
