FiberGlass Hood

Hey guys I was thinking about getting a Sypder Hood..kinda gonna go with theme of spyder..this is what it looks likes as well.

1. What is difference between Carbon Fiber Hood/FiberGlass? Besides the Carbon being lighter.
2. Maintance wise is it better for Fiberglass?

Give me the down lo on this here fancy gizmo..

Re: FiberGlass Hood

Fiberglass is a lot more prone to chip. Carbon fiber is much stronger. Carbon fiber use trickled down to the automotive industry from being used on space shuttles and airplanes. If NASA uses it, that should tell you which one is the better product. Plus, carbon fiber fits more like OEM than fiberglass.

Very paintable....refer to Pooponurhead.

I know his car gets whored out multiple times daily, but its for all the right reasons!

Honestly i can vouge for both sides of the story. Though ive never owned a fiberglass hood, my old Neon had a VIS carbon hood and 2 fiberglass front bumpers, skirts and a rear bumper before I got intelligent and bought a urethane bumper.

The hood fit damn close to factory, the fiberglass parts were a different story. There was rediculous amounts of time in the body kit by my body guy at the time getting that crap to fit on. Now that i know how to do body work, i feel bad for putting my old body man through that mess! It was a show car so rock chips were my enemy. I was touching up that front end WEEKLY to hide the white specks that kept popping up. I finally decided to go urethane whenever i had 2 rocks one winter chipped it so bad in 2 spots t make snowflakes about 2 inches in diameter and the paint bubbled and flaked off.

Follow the general rule of thumb:You get what you pay for.

Thats why fiberglass parts are cheaper. They never fit and their prone to chipping. I've got a fiberglass grill shell for my Dakota that I've got about 5 hours of body work in and its been painted twice since I bought it just over a year ago.

Re: FiberGlass Hood

dude uh, doesnt fiberglass warp when exposed to heat, like uh YOUR ****ING FLAMING BALLS HOT H22?!?

just a though, i remember heat having an affect on my friends fiber, he beat the bumper off with a hammer, probably on you tube somwhere, he was yelling " stupid ****ing fiberglass, say hello to my original bumper!"

Re: FiberGlass Hood

If you knew how they made the body parts out of fibreglass, you'd understand why they never seem to fit right. Not to mention that IMHO those hoods that you posted the pic of look absolutely revolting. I seriously think they will ruin the clean lines of the Prelude.

Re: FiberGlass Hood

Well, he is running the R34 front bumper already. but I agree the hood doesn't suit the Prelude. But these hoods and body kits are left to one's preference though. If you like it get it.

Re: FiberGlass Hood

one thing that you should realize is that with the "carbon fiber" hoods you get from VIS, seibon, etc...is that it's an FRP or plastic frame with a single layer of carbon fiber over the top to make it look pretty a true carbon fiber hood is going to be X10 the price

if you're going to paint the hood anyways why not go FRP and then just get the 3m protective film over the front of the car to protect from rock chips?
