5th Gen OEM Fog Light Help

So i just installed my OEM fogs today... pic to follow. how the hell do i wire these so that i can use them with only my running/parking lights. i had no idea that with HONDA's wiring harness and setup that they can only be used when the headlights are on. Please Advise... thank you

I'm in the process of working this out myself. There was a writup put on PO.com a little while ago, but that was about as helpful as a chocolate teapot. But basically you need to cut and splice a couple of wires. Givvus a week or two and I'll have a writeup for ya.

In case you haven't noticed, they also turn off when you go high beam. Apparantly it has something to do with some retarded road law regarding the number of lights you can have on at one time, and counts parking lights as two.

Couldn't you just splice them into your low beams wires?

I did that with my last car and it worked perfectly, just splice and sodder, cover with black electrical tape and BOOM, good to go

how much did you pay for usdm fogs? you shoulda bought jdm ones, they look better, wire up to cut on with parking lights and they stay on with the high beams. No splicing needed either

ya just try splicing it into the low beam. the circuit should stay hot even while switched into highs. or you couls just run a split wire and tag both.

just google Jdm fog lights for 01 prelude. 97-01 match up. and then it should pull you into the shopping tab. and look from there

What looks better is up to him, not you. This is your only warning. (Yes, I'm in a bit of a bad mood)

My question to all you who suggest splicing onto the low beam wires, is how will that help turn the lights on when only the parking lights are switched on?

using a simple relay will allow you to acheive the use of your fog lights whenever you wish.

check the 5th gen resource guide for wiring diagrams. I too have purchased the USDM foglight kit complete. I'll be using multiple relays in order to have use of the fogs when the headlights are off and when the highbeams are in use. I'll get to it in a few months when work slows down.

Well I havent personally done it but if you want your fog lights to come on with your park lights but be able to turn them off when you want then use a relay SPDT (right ogs) that you can buy at a parts store or radioshack and a swich of your variety. Buy about 6-8feet of like 18 ga speaker wire and a hlaf a dozen terminals to fit the relay. Mount your switch and all the jazz and run the speaker wire to the front of the car. Hook one end to a parklight wire and the other end to terminal 85 on the relay. Connect 86 to ground and run a 16-14 ga wire from the battery (make sure you fuse it!) to terminal 30 on the relay and hook your foglights up to 87. When your switch is on and the park lights are on it will energize the relay safely turning on your fog lights without over loading any factory circuits. I have never checked the park lights to see if there is anything funky like a switched ground or some thing like our totally messed up high beam and low beam wires. Hooking up high beam driving lights was a head scratcher. Never seen a setup like that before but Ill try and to a short write up.

There's a bypass that you can do. Part of the reason that they dont' come on with the parking lights is that the socket the loom plugs into (socket 5 from memory) doesn't get power until the low beams are on. If you read the JDM fog instructions they state to plug into socket 2, which has power when the parking lights are on. However there is another part of the USDM loom that stops that from being the quick fix I wish it was.

omg please do not do this. it will cause a frenzy of unwanted results unless you diode isolate correctly, and it will most likely still give different results than what Bill is asking about. that...and it would be a totally rigged setup that defeats the whole purpose of getting the cleanliness of OEM or JDM lights.

both of you are 100% correct . if someone can give us the link or resource to the OEM factory fog light schematic, neverdun, ogs, or myself (and probably someone else) can give a detailed description on how to do this. it isn't to difficult, we just need to see how the trigger inputs are designed.

EDIT: hey look...600 posts B*****S!!!

Re: 5th Gen OEM Fog Light Help

okay so i've been lookin for this info for a lil while now (search and google) and i'm coming up with nothing...

DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THE WIRING SCHEMATICS AND RELAY/SWITCH SET UP ARE THE SAME FOR BOTH JDM AND USDM FOG LIGHTS? I AM CURIOUS BECAUSE OBVIOUSLY AS YOU CAN SEE I HAVE THE USDM FOGS AND IF THE JDM ARE PLUG AND PLAY WITH THE SAME WIRING SET UP I MIGHT ENTERTAIN PURCHASING THE JDM FOGS AS WELL. JDM ONE WEEK AND USDM THE NEXT. IT'D BE LIKE A WARDROBE CHANGE FOR MY LUDE. JUST CURIOUS. THANKS!!

Re: 5th Gen OEM Fog Light Help

well here is the installation manual but it doesnt say anything about the actual schematics.

http://www.handa-accessories.com/pre...efoglights.pdf

here is a good write up on the jdms, which in theory should not be very different.

http://www.hondaprelude.to/articles/...l/jdmfogs.html

According to this link here, the input source can be selected by literally choosing port "1" or "2". I think you would want #1.

it kind of depends though on where the 2 relays get are getting their input.

my suggestion: test the open ports on the interior fuse panel to see which one gives you voltage when only the parking lights are on, or whichever one you feel is the best trigger for you. then use a low amp in-line fuse (like 7.5 or 5A should be fine) and test it out. worst case, the fuse will pop or the lights simply wont turn on.

really all you need to do is know which wires are the input and what exactly the relay is doing. any part that goes to an actual Headlight terminal, should be able to get swapped for a parking light source.
the service manual does not have anything on foglights so that is not very helpful.

After you see through all the crazy honda wires, it is simply just an input that says when "x" circuit (parking lights or headlights) has power applied, allow it to fork off to this new circuit "y" (which will be the fog lights in this case).

Then circuit "y" says ok, now there is a small amount of input from "x" but i need route this through a relay or 2 and a switch so that a larger power source can send power to the actual (bulbs).

find the input, make it the parking lights. find the switch, make sure it isnt connected to the headlights. hope this helps.
