Resonator Probles

I took out my resonator today, but Im not sure if I took out everything that I was supose to? It goes my air filter down to 2 air inlets and after that everything else is gone. Is this correct or should there be nothing under my air filter? If anyone out there has pictures of what it looks like when its done right that would really help me?

I have a 5th gen.

If you've removed the whole thing then there should be nothing left in that little area in the bumper. You have your filter and airbox, and there is nothing below the lower part of the airbox. There are pics on here somewhere, but I don't have the time to find them right now.

Mine now looks like the third picture from the top, but with the small piece of pipe with the valve and resonator removed. Is that correct?

^ he's giving you the right advice and he's gonna be okay... :)

He's a nice guy, I promise... just look at his first pic.. you should be able to look down through where your cone filter will sit (through that oval opening) and NOT see any big plastic pieces in there anymore... that resonator down there = big restriction.. It will amaze you how much plastic goes into making that stock intake... some people take out the crap in the fender area there (resonator) and leave the upper stock intake (just the box that the filter sits in and on back towards the engine). They claim if you run a K&N stock air box filter it will give you similar gain or even be superior to a short ram intake (SRI). I took the whole thing off for a custom SRI... Good Luck.

thanks thomas for the good pics.

Re: Resonator Probles

Removing all that crap helped. ALOT. My valve was rusted shut and not letting air in. At first i just took all the stuff out and then ran the stock box covering the openings with some fine mesh screen. Didn't need it but i had it so i put it on. Then i got my intake....I know it isn't the best intake in the world but it was cheap off ebay and gave me alot better throttle response. All in all get that crap out of there and get some air to that engine.

Re: Resonator Probles

Resonator out with type-s intake and k&n filter is the dyno -proven best combo... but removal with a sri or cold air is good too

Re: Resonator Probles

This is interesting. I'm not thread-jacking but just adding to the rusted valve. I have low rpms even at warm temperatures. I've adjusted my idle air screw and it still the same. If the valve is rusted up and will not allow air in, could that be my problem? I've cleaned and fixed the IACV and FITV already. It makes sense doesn't it? :P

Re: Resonator Probles

What are your other symptoms? Consistently low rpms could just mean your throttle cable is a little slack and needs some tightening, couldn't it?

What did you guys do with the vacuum tube in the third last picture?
Is it ok to cut it and plug it up with something?

I don't have anything else. Just the low rpms, even after adjusting the idle screw and checking it multiple times. I would think there was some kind of debris stuck where the valve opens but it could be rusted up as well..

You can cut it and plug it up with a screw if you want to. Most of us didn't bc it leaves a long section of line in the engine bay. trace it to where it enters the throttle body and there should be a port next to it (to the left) that just has a cap on it. pull that cap off, cut your line and stick it onto the port.

What're the disadvantages of removing the resonator? I'm having second thoughts about removing mine.

Re: Resonator Probles

i dont think your resonator has anything to do with your low idle. how low is low? have you tried adjusting the slack on your throttle cable?

i feel like when i adjusted my idle screw, it didnt really make a difference. maybe i was doing it wrong? i just tried it with the white waxy screw at different positions, i.e. all the way closed, half a turn out, full turn out. didn't see a difference in any positions.

Well as the guys posted above, one of em was talking about how the that air valve in the resonator could rust up and not open/close properly, possibly restricting airflow, that's why I asked. And mine is low as in 200~400 rpms.
Cleaning out the IACV and turning the plunger down didn't really change either.
