Need a lil advice

Wzup pz. A few days ago, while heading to work my check engine light comes on, next day i reset it, now, still on.. The codes i kept getting were P0171(sys too lean), and code P0170(fuel trim malfunction). My buddy at the shop looked into these codes and says the egr port is clogged and also suggested i get a new intake manifold.Other than that the lude's runnin alright. Does that suggestion sound about right or not? If that's correct, how much should i be spending on one?

well look at it this way. my car has 150K miles on it..i have started to replace everything from when i bought it. if you know it is old it would never hurt to refresh it. but the suggestion sounds ok for a suggestion. unless ur buddy knows the car type. that is all it is..take it to someone who knows the car. if he knows the car then start with the cheaper solutions.

Im assuming its LTFT, long term fuel trim... that could be a problem with really any emissions device in your car. See what happens is when there are little problems with your fuel trim.. say it runs a little lean, STFT (short term fuel trim) adjusts for it, its recorded in your ECU but that data is updated so often because your car is always running either rich or lean so that your O2 sensor actually gets a cross-over. Now if it goes too far out of whack the PCM takes a note from its RAM (thats erased every time the car is turned off) and basically puts a sticky note into PROM (programmable read only memory which is deleted only when you disconnect your battery). The note in PROM is for the LTFT and that is more commonly used by technicians for a diagnosis and can be accessed with a scan tool. When your LTFT and STFT get so far apart that your O2 sensor isnt able to get crosscounts the PCM flashes up a MIL and records a flash screen of every sensor in your computers memory for a scan tool to access and a technician to make a diagnosis.

Onto your friend, I do not believe that a new intake manifold would fix anything, maybe an induction service, IE clean off the carbon deposits. The EGR being clogged would give its own code, you have a simple problem with the car running too lean or too rich, and you said lean. So reasons a car might run lean, possibly clogged fuel injectors, plugged fuel filter, restriction in the lines, weak pump, bad fuel pressure regulator, bad O2 sensor, there are a million things but there are a few for you.

Hope this all helped, at least to understand what the codes mean. Keep us updated.

Could be as simple as a gas cap.

Re: Need a lil advice

Derek, did you end up solving your problem? I'm getting the same issue right now, with the LTFT and STFT with the check engine light.

O2 sensor, EGR valve?

Thanks!!

Re: Need a lil advice

gas cap is usually an evap code. p0171 p0170 are usually lean codes. check for a vaccum leak. one way you can check that... get a can of carb cleaner (one w/ that red little straw) while the car is at idle. spray around the intake manifold, the throttlebody, and all the vaccum lines. if the idle JUMPS then you found your leak. Lean usually means too much air not enough fuel. hope this helps.

When you say fuel system cleaning, does that mean something like seafoam?

Thanks!!

Re: Need a lil advice

well you can actually do something called a motor vac. you hookup a motor vac machine... (it acts as a fuel pump that contains higher octane and additive to clean your injectors and valves) it hooks up to your fuel feed to your rail and the return from your regulator.

Re: Need a lil advice

I called around here, and it seems there's no-one that's heard or does Motorvac (Midas, Pepboys, and 2 local service places). Is there a place to go to find out who supplies this service (I already checked out the manufacturer's website but there's nothing there).

All the other service departments provide a fuel system cleaning, but with different systems. Do you think they're all the same??

Thanks!!

K

Re: Need a lil advice

Another dumb question. How hard is it to change the fuel filter?

I think I'm going to run seafoam in the tank and brake booster then change the fuel filter, and if that doesn't work, get it motorvac'd.
