Wzup guys, gotta problem.Earlier i was cruisin with the fam on the freeway in stop & go traffic. When i was able to get up to about 40mph, my lude didn't wanna accelerate anymore & keep decreasing in speed. After I pulled over, I tried starting the car a couple of times but it wouldn't work. I had the air on inside but noticed the temp gauge actually dropping slowly. I looked under the car and saw little drops of coolant also. Later, after my car arrived home after getting towed, i looked at the radiator fluid level and it was fine. I then looked at the over flow reservoir and noticed the inner hose that attaches to the cap had a hole in it and the middle section looked inflammated. U guys think changing the hose will help?

I dont think its good for that hose to have a problem as thats how it sucks back up from the overflow but i dont think that caused your problem, if your temp was dropping its not from a low coolant problem, that would raise the temp. I dont know what could be causing the problem you have though, maybe a dead spot in the tps or the injector resistors... but that wouldnt mean it had to be at 40... is the car an automatic? maybe theres a tranny problem, not enough pressure or something..

poohbear will become famous soon enoughpoohbear will become famous soon enough
It sounds like your fighting a few things here. These problems your noticin\ could very well not have anything to do with the problem of your car running. But then again it could. Its hard to tell with out more information or actually looking at the car. So keep that in mind please.
The fact that your overflow tube was inflamed won't stop ur car from running, but that does tell me that your car has been running kinda hot. What was your temp like before the problem started? Does your car usually run hot? What's the temp like out side where you where at? Stop and go traffic in the hot sun can worssen problems.
Preludes tend to brun oil especially vtech motors, I would change your oil and keep a carfull eye on it. Double check for leaks, put a piece of card board under your car when you park it over night and see if anything at all shows up. Somtimes cars have "hidden" leaks that are not very visible from a quick look over on the block.
Did you throw any smoke out you exhust when this happened? Have you or your freinds noticed any strange colors from you exuhst when you lay some pedal into it? IE black blue white? Some times I throw white out from the condinsation that builds up in my cat back from slow driving or ideling in traffic a while. and when I slam into it all that condenstion gives me a fast burst of white smoke.
You may want to check your oil when you change it for water or collant. Oil and coolant don't mix so when you drain ur oil into a pan you will see little drops or puddles of watter ontop of the oil. This is bad news so let's hope you don't find any.
I don't know if this is true for hondas but with some cars if there is no coolant in the car then the car won't give a temp reading. So if you were losing coolant or no coolant was getting to the motor suddenly then you would see a drop in temp at your gauge. But again this may not be true with hondas. So somone please correct me if I'm wrong.
After you check all your fluids and your ready to start your car have your freind (edit) turn the key to the on position but not turn the car over. Have him do this while you put your ear next to the gas tank. Listen for the high pitched whine of your fuel pump. If you cannot hear it you just have a fuel issue that needs to be hanndled. After all no fuel no power.
Once you check all those thing and everything is ok, turn the car over see if it starts, if it does, turn your heat on. Make sure as the car warms up you have hot heated air somming out of your vents. That's a good indication that your cooling system is working well. Also check the return radiator hose to make sure its cold on start up then when the thermostat opens it gets hot. (The hose you want to check is the hose on top). If it slowley get warm with the warming of tje engine and not suddenly with the opening of the thermostat. That will tell you your thermostat is stuck open. Again if all that checks out then your probebly good on the coolant side.
Then check you trans fluid after the car is warm. The trans fluid needs to be checked when te car is at running temp and at idle.
If everything checks out and no odd noises or smoke, then you need to drive it for further diagnossis.
Like I said there could be several issues that could have happend, from just a burp your car did for no apparent reason and everthing is ok, to got to hot your coolant system failed and you warpped a head.
This is just a way for you to start. I hope this helps keep us informed with what u find.

Thanx for tha replies peeps, yeah earlier i added the engine oil, checked the tranny fluid level , and the coolant level and all of them are within limits, but still the lude won't come alive, this is wild, i checked all the lines and hoses on top & bottom to monitor leaks, but i don't see anything I'm gonna go give it one more try though, and as far as the temp, that whole day it was good to go, never had an issue with it in general

check the timing belt for broken teeth or other damage. that was my first thought. When your trying to crank it, look at all the belts to see which ones are turning. it's possible you are causing more damge every time you try to crank it.

Michelle V-Tech is on a distinguished road
Hi. I'm having to the same problem with my prelude. I was on my way home from work a few days ago and I noticed my car began to shake slightly. I tried to pull over and at that moment my car just shut off. I got it to turn on eventually and it shock it way to the side. I tried starting the car a few times once I was on the side of the road and my engine was shaking. After awhile I added coolant and the car started up fine and drove it home. I figured that may of had something to do with it. I drove it to and from work the next day..no problem. Yesterday morning I moved my car and parked it again. When I went to turn it on again it didnt start. It would crank but no fire. Its sparking fine and the fuel is fine. My neighbor is a mechanic and confirmed that. He said it sounds like my timing belt may have skipped or came off. He has not checked it yet. Is it possible that the problem is my belt? Is it hard to remove the cover myself to see the damage myself before I take it to a shop?

Thanks.

the cover is easy to take off, just remove anything that is attached to it, undo the bolts and it comes off. be careful not to loose any of the washers/grommets

Yeah I would pull the timing belt cover and check that, because it you still keep on cranking on that, you'll push the piston right up into the valves and bend them. Very common on all Honda models, (Civic, CRX, Preludes) Plus too your timing belt runs the water pump and that little problem with that overflo hose that may have been a tell tail sign its time for a new timing belt, water pump and tensioner. Good luck mate, hope you are able to get that fixed and you don't have any damage to your valves. But I would check that before you go cranking on the motor anymore. At 177K mile I would say its due for a second timing belt job. I'm about to get mine done as well at 144K, it had its first one done at 95K.

Also, i saw a couple of sites that sold used h22's with mileage between 35-65,000, they're asking for $1,200, i figured i'd looked into throwing a lower mile engine anyways, think that price is good?

Not too bad, Thats about the going rate, but check on shipping unless they come with free shipping could run you a grip of cash. I found a H22 for about $800 but no warranty plus it wasn't running when it was pulled. So its a gamble I guess. I was lucky with my 3rd Gen I bought a B21A1 with low miles and that thing rocked. I bought it for $400 and that included shipping that was a great deal.

Right on man Guess it's worth a shot, i've had civics and an accord in the past, but didn't cling to them nearly as much as my bb6, feel me?

Oh yeah, I've owned four Preludes a 1984, 2- 1990 SI s, and my1997.

I was bitten when I got my learner's permit, I guy from my church had a 1987 brand new Lude. My dad had the 1985 CRX, so was comparing the two back then no comparision Prelude hands down I fell in love with that car and ever since.
