Notorious honda tick

I understand that all hondas have that notorious tick at idle. But how much tick is to much ticking? Are we talking not even audible with the hood shut or still loud idleing next to a 747 prepping for take off?

Hond recomends a lash adjustment every 60k, and I plan on doing this here soon. But in the mean time I'm just curious how much of the honda tick I should be getting ticked about.
Thanks guys and gals

If you sit in your car while its running and windows down, can you hear it tick?

Only if I'm parked next to a wall or another car that will bounce the sound off for me. You have to be listening for it though at idle. The sound of the intake hising at idle is probably just as loud. However if you take it to about 1000 or 1500 it becomes slightly more promanant and could then be heard without a wall but again you would to listen for it.

Thats probably about as thick as you would want to go unless you have other problems. Find a good shop that does Honda motors. My ticks pretty bad so I'm going to get it done when I get back in town. The dealership will cost you $166 but a shop will only charge like $50 or so.

Yeah that's about right, I already schedualed a visit with my buddy week after next. 50$ and some beer and he's going to check my clearences and give me some lift time.
The tick really isn't all that bad sounding IMHO. However I don't think the lash has ever been checked so its a good move especially for around 50$.
I just wasn't really sure what the expect to hear from this motor not having very much honda experiance. I just know its always going to tick away and that's that.

Mine was ticking pretty bad til I adjusted it 3 weeks ago. Honda recommends a special tool for the H22 as the valve adjustment is done with a locking bolt and a screw so you want to set it and then turn the bolt without turning the screw that its screwed onto... it was a pain without the tool but wasnt that bad and didnt take me as long as the computer said it should take a master tech to do it and I didnt have the right tools!
