New cat. need opinions

I know we have a parts guide and I have looked, I need a new cat. and there's only one listed there so I was wondering if anyone else new of a better cat. out there or if thats the best one. I'm not looking to spend a million $ on a cat. but I would pay enough for a good one. The one on this site I can def. afford.

What kinda pricing is good for high flow cats from these companies? I found an OBX for about $115 that is an OEM high flow cat. How would that compare?

I bought the Random Tech high flow cat for around 300. Expensive, I know...But it's definitely a quality piece of engineering.

Mine caught the grass on fire yesterday. Whoops!

I bought an OBX high flow cat and it set off my check engine light. I replaced it with a flowmaster high flow and everything runs great now.

I too have a random on my lude. Just put it on 2 days ago and love it. I didn't have to pay for it though. The cat was in the Ludes trunk with all its paper work when I bought it :-) but just remember that a new cat from honda is 650+. So around 300 or so for a trusted high flow isn't all that bad in contrast.
Also with random they pride themselves on having oem catalyst standards with maintaining a higher flow rate then most mufflers. So says the web site :-/. However whatever you decide good luck.

I put a Magnaflow/Carsound cat on mine about 2 years ago. $70 on eBay and $40 to have flanges welded on and have it installed

its tricky b/c a lot of the ones i was looking at are not high flow. magnaflow and random both make standard OEM style cats that are a little cheaper but dont do anything for performance. so if u find a good deal, make sure it is what your looking for. I'm not talking to anyone in particular btw...just giving a tip from what i found so far...

Dumb question probably, will a warn out CAT rattle like crazy or could it? Also could that cause the car to surge while first hitting the gas from a stand still?

I think I'll have to replace my CAT as well, I priced one here at a local muffler shop and they quoted me $120 installed. Not sure but I think he said it was a flowmaster. I'll have to double check

^^ Actually I just read in the latest IT magazine where they replaced an old warn out cat on a 93 miata and gained 16.9 hp and 7.1 tq. I know old warn out exhaust rattle so most likely the warn out cat's will do the same. Oh yeah, and the only dumb question is the one not asked, guys on this site are always more than willing to answer any question they can.

^^ yeah I was looking for the rattle taking my hands all around the exhaust shaking it to see if it would rattle against the shrouds but nothing, but I heard from somewhere that the CAT could be coming apart inside and during certain RPM ranges there can be a very annoying rattle so I think that is what is happening. I have a brand new header, fairly new CAT back, although the CAT is factory never been replaced to my knowledge. I think I will take the car by and have the CAT installed.

Im getting a little frustrated anyone have any ideas?

yeah actually I tried that after I posted this and the old cat code went away but the o2 sensor code comes back right away. I had honda replace the o2 sensors a few months ago you think they'd help me out with it this time for free since those parts are supposed to last way longer than 3 or 4 months

Ok, so i realize this is an old thread, but what ever happened with that O2 sensor. I'm throwing the same P420 code and was considering the Random Tech Cat, but if it's just going to throw more codes maybe i'll reconsider...

http://preludezone.com/showthread.php?t=7362

some of these should should help. I am trying to consolidate all of these threads on high flow cats. General rule of thumb. If the Random Tech Cat costs A LOT, (and I think it does) you wont throw a CEL b/c it is a true High Flow Cat. if it is just a cheap test pipe, you will definately throw a CEL.
