Icon5 I am still getting codes P0301 and P1399

I am stil getting the codes but now with black smoke when I accelerate fast, also my car is not setting the fuel trim...IE smog requirements...Although the car still has 195hp, starts fine, and drives fine...besides the occasional MIL flashing from a misfire...any input will help but I think the motor is going out

I just bought this car....

i had the same problem, but after cleaning out the IAC valve pretty well, and a few bottles of injector cleaner the codes haven't come back for me. oh yeah, is it AT or MT...my shifting was partly to blame with my black smoke...

HOLY ****!!!, now lets be realistic...the cleaning of the IAC valve made a HUGE difference when leaving in first and in parking lots...where I was having hesitation, but I don't see how that would stop black smoke coming from the tailpipe when flooring it...I am going to get drop some more Chevron fuel treatment and fill her up with 91 and drive around to see if she will throw the EVIL CODES again or if this fixed it...I PRAY THIS IS OVER and I can just enjoy my saucy Honda!!!

Thank you all for the help, every time you ALL give me your best idea and every problem I have had someone had the solution and I just want to tell who ever sees this....THANKS YOU ALL SO MUCH!!!! PreludeZone.com ****ing ROCKS!!!!

Cleaning the IAC valve helped with, leaving in first gear, much more smooth. But on the way back from the gas station, I got codes "on-demand"...meaning I just drove at 3,000RPM's and maintained that in 2nd or 3rd gear...resulted in flashing MIL...damn it....anymore recommendations???

alright, there is a rediculous flow chart that describes how to troubleshoot this in the downloadable service manual.

for starters thought, try this:

1. swap cylinder 1 spark plug with another, reset the ECU and see if you get a different code respective to the cylinder you put the cylinder 1 into. i.e. if you put cylinder 1 plug into cylinder 2 slot, you may get code p0302. that would be a bad spark plug.

2. swap the fuel injector from another cylinder into cylinder 1 and reset ECU and see if another code pops up. this would be a bad fuel injector causing the prob.

3. Check the fuel injector for a "clicking" sound at the no. 1 cylinder. It should make some type of sound but it may be hard to hear, especially if you have intake/exhaust or other upgrades like that. If the injector is not making any sounds, check the harness' and cables between the ECM, injector resistor, and the fuel injector.

Some other possible causes:
-Ignition wires fautly
-Distributor faulty/malfunction
-compression low (hopefully not)
-incorrect Valve clearance.

How many miles? have you had the Timing belt replaced? Be sure to always use 93 octane, 91 at a mininum. H22 engines are not designed for anything less!

P1399 is Random Misfire, I know what the codes mean.

I have done the ignition system...cap, rotor, plugs, so on. I need to check valves and do leak down and compression test, I am procrastinating...I am scared!

The weird thing is the car keep running, with the occasion misfire code(but I avoid that by staying away from 3k RPMs) and the occasion black smoke out the tailpipe.

if you know when the car is going to do it, that can help troubleshoot a lot. Is it
A. Only low RPM and load
B. Only when accelerating
C. Only high RPM and load
D. or not specified?

If you can narrow it down, it helps isolate which possibe cause to look at first. I am thinking either the fuel pressure is off or maybe even the EGR system. Worst case is that this second timing belt is stretched and it has caused the Crank position sensor to trip.

I have seen those same page your talking about from the Helm Manual (I bought it and have a hard copy) but it happens while maintaining 2,500-3,000 RPMs in 2nd & 3rd gear mostly...but can happen between those RPMs in any gear...not really in first because I don't maintain RPM in 1st and 4th and 5th are mostly freeway gear so I only notice the codes getting thrown is 2nd and 3rd at 2,500-3,000 RPMs.

I really need to do valves ASAP and clean the danged ERG for good measure.
