Non-Ricer Exhaust

Hey, I am new to PZ. I just recently bought a 2000 Honda Prelude and I would like to buy a catback exhaust for the car for daily driving. I would like to have an exhaust that does not sound ricey, but has a deep sound to it. Can you guys post exhausts that would fit best for this description and maybe sound clips.

I would just get the exhaust and not a full cat back save you a good bit of money.

That's the only bad advice you've ever given David.

Do you know why some Civics sound awesome and others don't?
Because the ones who sound good, have the whole exhaust, and the ones who sound like **** just have a muffler. Not to mention, the full exhaust helps performance and FUEL MILEAGE. It's very minimal, but it helps.

Spread your ass cheeks and fart and all you get is the funky smell. Squeeze them together and you get the funky sound. Which do you prefer your car to do?

I have heard MAYBE 2 civics that sound good, the rest have that nasty ass raspy annoying sound.

If you want it to sound good you better be forking out a decent amount of money and not half assing it like I have seen a lot.

I can't agree more, at the Prelude meet we went to the local street racing hang out area in st. paul and watched some races. even tho there were civics there that would stomp me, they were turbo'ed and all that, they were the worst sounding cars I have ever heard in my life, and they were loud. It was like putting a weedwhacker and bumblebee on a super, uber mega phone and point it right at my ear...lame....

Don't buy a Civic.

In all seriousness, engine size has something to do with it. An H22 is way more throughty than a B18. An F22 sounds deeper than a B16. See where I'm going?

Custom!

It's more expensive (about $700 including installation) but definitely worth it. You can make it sound however you want it to. Keep in mind, mine is straight through as well as 2.5in as opposed to chambered and 2.25 ID like basically all aftermarket catbacks. They advertise as 60MM but that's the outer diameter, it is only 2.25 inside. If you're just going for sound then check out the Greddy SP2 or Tanabe Super Hyper Medallion. Not ricey in the least bit

I highly recommend the Apexi WS2. Full stainless steel and even with a high flow cat, it purrs at idle, and never gets ricey, even with WOT. The only con I can think of....the WS2 is made to hang low, so if you have or plan on getting a substantial drop, bottoming out is going to happen, its inevitable. But, fortunately, it's only the bottom of the flange dragging, not the piping itself, so its not a big deal.

I am going for more sound than performance so which catback is best for more sound (deep tone, not ricey).

I had the Greddy Evo II on 2 of my old Integras and it was amazing. Even on the little 1.8L it had an amazing deep tone. I heard it on a fully built Mitsubishi the first time I ever heard it and it was one of the best sounding exhausts ever, so I got one for each car I had, lol.

Personally, I'm going for the Tanabe Super Hyper Medallion, the way that exhaust looks and sounds is amazing, and since I will be getting it when I go boost, it will be a turbo back exhaust, and one of the best IMO, and the rest of my exhaust will be custom so it will sound reeeeaal nice

S2k mufflers are twin-loops so I think the mugen is about as close as ur gonna get to the s2k sound lol. Oh and they dont all have a 2.2L, the AP1 and AP2 use the F20 and F22, cant remember which is which tho.

Why spend all the money for an exhaust if it's just for sound? Most of these mufflers listed here can be purchased as a universal so get some 2.5in piping and weld up something custom with a fatty resonator.

I know I'm gona get flamed like a motha fuccker for this ...

but g35's and 350z's have some of the best sounding stock exhausts. Now I'm not a big fan of nissan, but custom piping and a muffler from a g35 would sound incredible IMO. Very deep, low, and even at WOT they dont get real loud. Also, you wont have a 5" fart can sitting on the back of your car.

Btw,

I also love the Evo II. Buddy of mine just got the evo II on his 4g. I'm 100% behind it. It sounds great.

Have a shop that does a really good crush bend that is not all pieced together give you a header back 2.5" exhaust... as long as you aren't upgrading the engine too much that won't offer too much restriction with the crush bend and you will save a bundle ($150). get a nice 4-2-1 header for about $250, a high-flow metal substrate cat ($80) from hottexhaust.com along with a big honkin' 4" * 18" (or so... check your space) resonator (maybe $70...or less) pick up a good muffler (I have heard good things about the magnaflow universal ovals... not another resonator) maybe like $85:
http://www.hottexhaust.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=10426
http://www.hottexhaust.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=14316
http://www.hottexhaust.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=59926

when you add things to your cart at that store they tend to be 10% cheaper than stated! I didn't add that up, but you'll save enough money to have a couple beers this weekend.

I have a similar setup, except my resonator is only 16" and the exhaust is still fairly loud... I also have a titanium nopi (n1 style) muffler that has a nice deep tone, but I am sure the magnaflow would be at least as deep (I used to have a flowmaster 40 series, which the magnaflow will be similar to).

CUSTOM EXHAUST FTW

No. If you want the sound of an S2000, buy an S2000.
I said size had a lot to do with it, not everything. Take into account of compression and internals.

Yes, the do sound amazing. They also have V6's, and bigger displacement.
Do that and I promise it will sound nothing like a VQ35 engine.
