Rear suspension - damper and upper BJ

Hey gang,
when i go over a bump or something i hear a cl-clunk sound coming from the rear, drivers side. The car was hit in that location b4 i got it, but no real damage was evident other than the fender, (15mph hit at most).

I did an alignment on the car and found the rear was off a bit, but everything looked good, tight.

I assume the culprit is the strut mount, since the rubber is 13 years old, and I have no way of inspecting it without removing it, and for the 18 bucks a pair i might as well switch it.

Two questions:
1. the manual says you have to remove the rear ball joint to take the damper out, is this true or is there another way around it?
2. is it worth replacing the ball joint? where should i buy it from?

thanks
