Automatic gear lever sticking
Hi, I'm fixing my friend's '92 BA-8 prelude. It has a problem where the automatic shift lever is getting stuck in park. I have checked the solenoid that locks the lever into park and it is functioning correctly. I also regreased tracks where the lever moves from park-reverse-neutral-D4 etc. It's now to the point where the lever needs to be almost yanked out of park before it will go into reverse. It's also a little hard to move it from reverse to park. Once it has moved a couple of times it seems to be OK. I'm a little suspicious that it might be the shifter cable or other linkage issues, but I'm hesitant to start pulling more things apart than I need to. Any suggestions on this?

Thanks to all those who looked. Replacing the cable solved the problem. For those who come across the same problem, the manual does show how to remove the shifter cable. It has a cover which looks like part of the transmission. The manual also states you need to remove the exhaust to replace the cable. It's not necessary. Simply unbolt the heat shield and let it drop down onto the exhaust pipe. That gives plenty of clearance to get a spanner in to undo the 3 bolts needed to remove the cable. It's a bit of a pain getting the bolts back in, but a lot less hassle than removing most of the exhaust system, especially without a hoist.
Biggest problem with the job. The locking washer attaching the cable to the control lever inside the transmission. |
