Radiator fan not running

Hi guys
So the temp indicator in the car works fine but the fans are not switching on I heard that the fan switch can be rigged with a paperclip(any metal object?) to turn the fans on permanently at start is this a safe process?Anything that can go wrong that could cause serious damage? If the fans switch on with this method where would the fault most likely lie.If the fans do not turn on what is the likely causes then.
Thx

Re: Radiator fan not running

The first thing i will do is start looking at the fan relay, from there on you must go check wiring. I once had to replace the fan brushes, worn out, and was not prepared to buy a new fan with a ridiculous price tag.

Re: Radiator fan not running

Turn on the air conditioning -- both fans should come on at that point, regardless of the coolant temperature. That'll tell you whether it's a problem with the fan relay or the fan itself.

Consider, too, that everything may be working as it should -- how do you know the coolant's hot enough to trip the relay?

Re: Radiator fan not running

after owning a 4th gen I found out the fans on them only come on if the engine starts to over heat. if your temps are fine theres nothing to worry about.

Tried the aircon but I had a leak in the system and theres no longer any refridgerant in the pipes I guess you need that as the fans didn't turn on.

Well the temp guage went to 3/4 and had to wait 20 odd mins on the side of the road for it to come down

Re: Radiator fan not running

Were you able to fix the leak and have the car back to regular operation with fans kicking on?

No - they should both come on as soon as you select air con on the climate control panel and turn the interior blower on. That last is important -- if you don't click over to at least the first notch on the blower, the air conditioning compressor doesn't start up, and neither do the engine cooling fans.

At speed or at idle? You may have a fan problem, but it's probably worth going through the cooling system as well -- how's the coolant in the overflow bottle, when was the last time the radiator was drained and the coolant changed, ditto the cap. The fan just helps pull air through the rad at rest or low speeds...if the cooling system is sick, the fans won't help much.

Re: Radiator fan not running

Well the aircon trick doesn't work for me but turns out the fans do work. What threw me was when ever I parked the car before the fans would always run until the engine was cooled down. Now that doesn't happen anymore which is strange that this behavior has changed so I thought wrongly the fans were not operating.
How does everyone else's car fans operate do they continue when the car is turned off or stop immediately?

Re: Radiator fan not running

It depends on the weather, and how the car's been driven. I've come back in on moderate days after a long drive, and had them run briefly or not at all. Hot day with lots of stop and go, and they'll run on and off for a bit. Circumstances have me on my 4th radiator, though, and I flush the system periodically, so I know the coolant is circulating well.

For me they have always run even a 3km run to the grocery store with no traffic etc. Will keep a close eye on my water levels think might be a leak somewhere and the other eye on my temp gauge.Thx

Re: Radiator fan not running

Look hard at the upper plastic part of the radiator. I've had two develop hairline cracks near the filler neck -- not enough to spew lots of coolant, but enough keep system from developing full pressure. The first time drove me nuts for a week, because when everything was cold, nothing would happen...the engine had to be good and warm, then there would be just a little weeping from the crack.

Re: Radiator fan not running

Found this to be the culprit of my fans not working. everything is cooling fine now! took me forever to find this. I had run my fans directly for about 6 months.
