94 Prelude Temp and Gas Gauges

Some smoke came from my dash and my gauges went out, I pulled my dash apart and got the Gas and Temp cluster out of the the vehicle, then the Gas and Temp circuit board out of the cluster, and I see some pretty obvious heat damage on one side of the gauges and some bulging capacitors. Does anyone know anyone else who repairs these circuit boards? I ordered a used cluster off of eBay but that one is bound to do the same thing. Does anyone know what can cause this other than time, with them being 27 years old for the oldest ones? A short I can look for, anything? I've seen a couple previous posts about the same thing but not much concrete information.

Re: 94 Prelude Temp and Gas Gauges

That seems to be an age-related thing that affects many 4th gens. I looked closely at mine when it went out a few years ago, and couldn't find any reason other than a resistor just failed and burned up. I don't know that anyone's seen a circuit diagram that lists out the components, which you'd need to repair the board. The only "fix" I've seen is to swap out for another one, like you've done.

Re: 94 Prelude Temp and Gas Gauges

My guess is your not talking about the wiring diagram but a component diagram?

Re: 94 Prelude Temp and Gas Gauges

very common issue with these 4th gen climate controls
some are repairable if the circuit board are too severely damaged blown caps ect.

heres a link on repairs
