A little, or a lot of help needed

Hi everyone,
So obviously I'm new here, and new to the diy car scene all together. But I have a project I'm going to learn on. I picked up a 92 prelude, don't know the model, however it does have a new <1000 miles JDM h22 vtec. The guy I bought it from was pretty disappointed in letting it go, as he did put some time into it. New motor mounts new clutch, some interior work.

I'm right now and over the next few (6) years am going to use this as a daily driver and will be fixing things as they break. It has 266,000 mile on it. So I will be scouring for help with some of those things.

What I'm looking for here is more for down the road. In about 6 years my Daughter will be turning 15, and the plan is we are going to tear down the car and "restore" it. I'm not talking about classic restoration or anything like that, but basically make it a good "worry free" car for her.

But as I will openly admit I'm not a "car guy" so I'm not really sure what I parts I should start collecting, what are good reasonable upgrades I should do, or basically where I should start looking for problems.

Things already on the list:
Interior makeover
Suspension
Transmission (as occasionally it pops out of second gear)
Lighting
Exterior Paint

If anyone can help me with links, lists of parts, or just general advice that would be phenomenal! Once again not looking to make a tuner, or a race car. I really just want something "cool enough" to turn some heads, but reliable so other than routine maintenance she won't have to worry about it.

Thanks in advance and look forward to chatting with you all.

Synchrotech - Honda & Acura Transmissions

"sports car" for a young person is hardly ever a good idea. Theres been so many wrecked ones and accidents that it would be a lot wiser to give them more not that sporty car to learn with

In 6 years car from 92 is not really going to be very "worryfree". Whats been fixed now start to be in that shape that you have to do them all over again

did the guy rebuilded that jdm engine?

Re: A little, or a lot of help needed

Thanks for the response!
Well, I suppose in hindsight I probably could have made a better choice for a starter car, and in 6 years may end up changing my mind, but as of now am invested in this one for about $2100, between car cost, tags and title, and a header to cat exhaust system. I have a feeling I would have a hard time recouping this cost.

But I also think that having her help me restore it will help with the way she treats it and drives it, at least I can hope.

And I know it's not going to be totally not worry free, any used car is not going to be worry free, but if I can hit usual problem areas, and give a reasonable base I'm hoping it's something.

As for the rebuild he bought it rebuilt.

is there any recipes that tells you whats been done/changed?

I mean maintenance history is pretty important and any swap engine should be rebuilded pretty well when youre changing it in (if you want it to last)

Unfortunately I'm pretty in the dark, all of the repairs were backyard repairs, so all I have is what he told me. The engine he ordered from a company in California that sent it up built.

Re: A little, or a lot of help needed

Your local junkyard is your friend.

Many have email notifications where you go to their site and fill out a "wishlist". They in turn send you an email when the model and stated year range show up.

The best part is you learn as you go on a car that's going to be recycled anyway so if you break something it's not a big loss. Great way to learn how to and great source for better parts at really low cost.

Now, some parts are interchangeable from across the Honda platform. The Prelude has a lot of specific stuff only used on the Prelude, which was in essence an R&D car. Hence the name.
But, stuff like brakes, shift knobs, electric window switches etc were also used on Civics, Accords and some Acura models, some are still being used on them.

Enter Honda Parts Now dot com. You go there and enter your car, find a part you want and in the search bar it populates a list of other models that used it. Ludeless junkyard may still have what you seek being that they are usually littered with 15-20+ year old Honda cars.

Another cool thing about HPN is the parts are the same as your dealer sells. They get them from HPN or other warehouses, but HPN is Hondas main warehouse while the others are sources HPN uses when need be.

You won't need a huge box of tools either. Screwdrivers (mainly phillips) and a ton of 10-12 and 14mm screws are used throughout the car. Extensions and swivels will be needed to gain access to stuff in tight places though. A door panel puller will be invaluable at the junkyard too.

Have fun with that car.
