poor fuel consumption

Hey guys
I have a 4th gen 2.2 si auto.
So about 4 years ago the car overheated actually cut out as i pulled into my driveway. Panicky i poured some water in to try cool it down which just led to a geyser of steam.
Anyway i have not seen any signs of mixing between coolant/water/fuel (thought i might have damaged the gaskets)car has run the same as it ever has no misfires engine light warns nothing .

Only thing is my fuel consumption dropped from around 10/11 km a liter to about 8.
Town driving but very little to no traffic.no heavy foot on the accelerator so driving style is not an issue.
Seemed to be a lot better when on the highway but town driving is far below what it used to do.

Recently the car got stolen got it back 2 days later but now the consumption is even worse down to 6 km per liter and the fuel gauge seems more erratic..

Anyone had a case of such low consumption before?.what was the cause
What should i check?
Would something like dynotuning solve this and what cost?
What should the engine compression be?

Re: poor fuel consumption

You should do compression and leak down tests to see that is everything OK

Hows your maintenance history otherwise: changed filters, valve adjustments, cleaned egr and other valves, cleaned injectors ever, newd ignition components and so on....??

You cannot dynotune stock ecu

Re: poor fuel consumption

hey TypeT thx for the reply just took the car in for a engine /ecu check they found nothing wrong. The injectors have never been cleaned to my knowledge but there are absolutely no symptoms associated with a clogged injector and the guy who ran the diagnostic said they were fine. So now im at a loss as to the cause.Air filter is fine.Never seen the oil filter .Just fitted a new exhaust couple weeks back.

newd ignition components? not sure what you mean here mate

- new spark plugs & wires
- new distributor cap & rotor
- new air/fuel filters
- clean injectors/iacv/egr/fitv
- bleed the coolant
- new pcv
- adjust valves and ignition
- adjust idle from tb's screw and throttle cable
- check does sensors work properly: map, iat and tps (and try calibrating tps)
- then check wires, connectors and hoses

check o2 sensors and vacuum/exhaust leaks (check all the seals - IM/header/TB gaskets, injector seals, maybe even buy valve cover gasket set...)
check timing. after that: double check timing

clogged cat might you give some trouble as well (usually when driving) - check cats condition

those are basic maintenance as well.
List works also with economy things
