New to Honda's

Hello all. First of all just want to say I'm completely new to Honda's. I know nothing. But my knowledge of cars isn't the same. Ok so I'm going to get right too it.

Looked at a 92 prelude si. It's from my understanding the 2.3 h23 VTEC. VIN code bb2. 5 speed. Pretty good condition and low miles. Well maintained other than rust. Currently the car is in shop for new fuel tank, lines, pump, sender, and filter. Car has 77k on the odometer. Car run and shifts beautiful. Needs some attention to body as typical rust in ohio. Rear quarters have been affected. What are some things I should look for? I'm using this car to travel to and from work, visit out area friends and family etc.

Title is an salvage. Previous owner son didn't know how to drive it and popped clutch and hit a parking lot barrier. so I was told. Looking down through the core support I couldn't see any frame damage or anything out of ordinary. Just rust. There's the history. I mean otherwise everything works. All lights, signals, cruise and sun roof, switches. All work. So again 92 prelude si 77k salvage title. What's a fair offer?? I know the motor and trans could possibly be worth 1500+. I don't want to low ball him but I also know that r/s titles... Drastically alter price, he was asking 3k I have him down to 2k. Pending review of under side. I love how she rides.

So fair price?
What else should I look for?
Kid safe?
Any other questions or concerns?

h23 vtec is pretty rare engine... are you really sure about that?

rust problems are pretty expensive to get fixd if you get em done properly...

Re: New to Honda's

put that prelude on to kbb.com, put in the of that prelude details except for a clean title prelude. cut the price that you get on kbb in half. start with that number and knock off $$$ for the imperfections on the car. since it does have under 100k miles, i think anywhere in the $1000-$1500 is fair.

Well I never said it was rare. I just said it was a good motor and trans and she be worth the 1500$ alone. But again... I'm new to Honda's. So don't really know how rare or not anything is.

So if it's rare then that just backs up what I'm already saying.

Which I did. I don't like KBB because they're values are always lower. I like nada however they don't go down that low. KBB suggestions are 15-1600. I just don't want to insult the guy. I mean 1k would be best. 1500 I can deal with. But 2k is higher than KBB for a showroom condition. Clean title.

Re: New to Honda's

at this point a car that old I don't think salvage title should matter. I paid 2k for mine and it had 200k miles.

yes exactly: how do you know its h23 vtec? did you checkd the marking on the head which said H23A (H23A1-3 are non vtec)?

like mobsta said normally it should be regular h23 in bb2

even if swapped still H22A is more common

Re: New to Honda's

No I didn't check any markings. Where are the located on head? I was just going off the title. And his word that everything was original. I was under the impression that SI's all came with vtecs...

Re: New to Honda's

Si's are not VTEC.

If the valve cover doesn't have a big ole "VTEC" sign on it, it's not a VTEC.

Re: New to Honda's

Ok. My bad. So I will check. But the motor really isn't my concern to be with. I could honestly careless what heads it has. I'm not a ricer anyway. I wanted something good on gas that reliable and safe for my son. Save on my truck and CTS V. So my original concern was the price. Based on the model year and whatever is under the hood.

Re: New to Honda's

1800 max to me. rust and salvage title are killers. he could also have bent something on the suspension if he hit the parking barrier hard enough

Re: New to Honda's

Id stay away from rusted hondas... if theres rust in some areas - imagine what there is where you cant see (bottom, under the side skirts etc)

or atleast take the side skirts off before you buy it to see what is under there
