Need help with 92 Prelude

Hello everyone, I am new to this forum and I just purchased a 92 White 5 speed Prelude. I need help with it already and would apreciate some help.

I just purchased it a few days ago and I noticed that my speedo is off. For example I will be going 75mph and everyone on the road is going as fast as me which is rediculous. I'm very certain that it is showing that I'm going faster then I really am. It's like at 75mph I'm really going around 65mpg. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Thanks for everyones help.

Thank you, now I would need to find out where the VSS is located heehee. I'm not much of a mechanic, so any type of guide or a forward me to a post of someone with the same problem will help a lot. Thank you sir.

take off your upper intake tubing (or your entire intake if you want)
disconnect the lower radiator hose from the block, and also the other smaller heater/coolant hose thats like 2 inches in front of the rad hose from the block as well
the VSS as wayyyy down on top of the tranny, right next to the rear motor mount. there is 1 12mm bolt holding it down, and one connector on the very top of it. you'll also see 2 powersteering hoses going directly towards it from the firewall.

Thanks so much, I'm just not familiar working on honda engine's. I'm more use to working on my 2000 Camaro SS/LS1.

So once I do find the VSS, what do I exactly look for after that? Do I make sure it's connected?

you could clean the points of the plugs to see if it had a bad connection, you could take it out to see if the gear is in rough shape,...theres 2 fluid lines running into it though...someone told me they were power steering lines...theyre around $45 on ebay if you end up having to get a new one

If you want a brand new one it will probably be expensive, if you want a working used one probably ebay, but make sure its the right one, compare yours to the one pictured...maybe someone has one for sale on this website?

yes i have that prob too..messes up the speedo but more importantly it may prevent your vtec from engagin...as that is all connected...so thats why i would say take care of it if you can and had vtec.

i would get it used cause its pretty cheap that way...open it up make sure the pin inside is not rounded out (like mine haha...its like a hex or something so it can turn "gears" in the unit). if its used you wanna be sure the connection is fine too..i hear that is faulty sometimes.

there is also a vss that is on a specific gen accord that will work as well but i forget wat years...you can search it up somewhere.

here are some pics off other peoples cars i found real quick..

That's for the pictures bro, so the second picture that is what I will be looking for correct? I called the guy I purchased the car from and he said he got the car when it was like that.

What he said it could be was that maybe the tires size was smaller then what the specs say for the car. I don't think that's the problem and if it was smaller I don't think it would matter that much right guys?

i doubt the tires have anything to do with it(but i dont know 100% so dont quote me on it, but i highly doubt its the tires)...i had stock tires on mine when i got it and the speedo still didnt work right...its probably just a worn out vss

oops sorry about calling you bro heehee. But I'm definitly going to see if it is the VSS. I'm going to try and find a new one for a good price. Even if it's not I asume it will need replacing sooner or later.

wheel and tire size I would think could make a difference, think about it.. if you had a wheel and tire set up that say was 48" (just a random number) in circumference.. and that was the stock size, the vss is calibrated to it. The axle spins one time around to go 4 feet, twice for 8 feet etc, the vss knows that.

Now you change the setup to go to smaller wheels.. say its now a 36" circumference. So now when the axle spins once.. the cars only gone 3 feet instead of 4, twice is 6 feet instead of 8... etc.

So the vss still thinks youre going 4 feet every complete turn of the axle but youre really going 3.. so say youre going along at 60mph according to the speedo thats set up for a 4 ft per turn car, (5280ft per mile.. divided by 4 times 60) is 79200 turns per hour to go 60mph, now multiply that by 3, to get the feet the car would be going with a circumference of 3 ft (237600) and divide that by 5280 ft per mile.. gives us an actual speed of now 45mph...

That is a 15 mph difference between the speedo and actual speed.

good enough for me haha...but a difference in tire size by an inch or so i still dont think would make a significant difference...depends on how many inches SKANLEZ is talking about...
