Icon5 Looking for opinions on 4ws

Looking for some opinions on 4ws systems. Anyone have experience in driving a prelude with electronic 4ws and the mechanical 4ws from the 3rd gen ludes.

I have owned a few 3rd gens and converted one of them to 4ws. I loved the mechanical 4ws. I do however own a 4th gen 4ws prelude but got it as a parts car for my other 4th gen. Wasn't derivable since it was rolled so no 4ws test drive. I am just wondering how they compare in the fell of driving e.g., mechanical vs electronic. I know how they both work and how they operate but the actual experience in driving both to compare is a different story.

For the people that have driven both which do you prefer, and put aside the headache the electronic 4ws can give you if the 4ws light comes on.

Wish one of my buddys near by owned one..

Also small question the search dosn't allow small words such as "4ws". I typed in four wheel steering but wouldn't I miss the posts that have "4ws"

Re: Looking for opinions on 4ws

I have an opinion, but it's not a good one. Like the rotary engine, electronic 4WS is a nice idea on paper. It SHOULD make for a more stable car at high speeds and a tighter turning circle at low speeds.... but it doesn't. Maybe it's just as the sensors, the motor and the springs wear out it allows for more compliance in the system, but I never felt comfortable driving with the 4WS. It is a real mind-job to have the rear end either over or under rotate (depending on the speed) compared to where you think the car should be tracking. Have you ever driven a car with messed up rear toe? It's like that x1000. There is always the confidence thing too of - even though the system is working fine NOW it could go without warning at any point, then I'll be dead. The fail-safe springs that should return the rear wheels to centre if the computer dies do not do their job as you may have read. I haven't been in a 3G as much as I'd like (a mate had one but I only ever got to drive it a few times), but being mechanical is there less chance of fail?

There is a good reason why car manufacturers ditched the idea, and more good reasons why I ditched mine. Taking the 4WS off turned my 4G from a good handling car into a great one.

Thank you for the response tassievteclude :) seems like what most people say that 4ws that it can be hard to predict when driving live auto cross? driving quick and then slowing down. Would be interesting to try that out.
