1992 honda prelude starting problem

Ive had my 1992 honda prelude types s 2.2 for about 2 years and its always had this problem, where i will have a really hard time starting in the cold. The colder it is the harder it is to start, when its warm outside it starts right up with no problems.

When i try starting it without pumping the gas or anything it will sputter , if I keep the key turn it will keep sputtering , then i try again and after about two or three minutes it starts to turn over then dies then i keep trying and it finally starts heres a video, its about two mins in , skipped the sputtering on accident thought it was recording. Its about 45 degrees, it starts pretty fast here compared to other times

I know there are alot of forums that have this question but ive looked through alot of them and there is never a answer most of the time i hear people say they change there distributor, spark plugs , wires , and a bunch of other stuff and no luck, some people say deal with it sense its an old car but i feel like this is to bad of a prob to just ignore it.

-Ive seen one person say that it was the ecu, that when he heated it up it would start but if the ecu was cold it wouldnt
-ANother said the IACV or the throttle body is dirty
-Also a vacuum/compression leak

Re: 1992 honda prelude starting problem

if you pump the gas while trying to start it, it doesnt really help much ... tomorow i plan on spraying some starter fluid in the intake to see what happens , ill post what happens , also ive heard it can be the main relay but people say if it were the main relay it would be the opposite good in cold bad in hot

So what have you done as far as diagnosing/troubleshooting?

Could be as simple as a weak battery worn down from the cold. Also, it's not a "type s," it's a base s model with the f22 engine.

Re: 1992 honda prelude starting problem

Yea i know its the base model with a f22A1 in it , nothing special but its my pride and joy sense ive fixed so many things on it.

I know this isnt a good way to go about it but i kind of just googled around and went at things that people said was the issue.

-Well I first read somewhere in a forum that it was the main relay so i took it out and resoldered all the points on it. Put it back in, no luck. Then went to picknpull and pulled about 2 of them off some ludes replaced them each day when starting no luck.

-Then i read that if ect sensor goes out it would make starting it really difficult so i replaced it with a new one, but no luck.

I plan on spraying starter fluid in throttle body tomorrow morning to see if its not getting gas then i could narrow it down to not getting fuel.

Also considering removing ecu and putting it in the fridge and when the day gets warmer put it back and see if it starts, but thats on the weekend sense i use the car alot during the week.

Never have tried diagnosing the problem, how would i go about it?

Re: 1992 honda prelude starting problem

Just wanted to clarify the model. Its like when ppl put a type r sticker on a rs integra hahah. I have a 92 too and its my pride and joy as well. Something about these cars is alluring. When you turn the key before it cranks, do you hear the fuel pump prime followed by a click? if you hear that then your main relay is okay. I remember when mine would act up it would start then die, weak start, die and then fire up and run just fine. It was in warmer weather when it happened (may-june.) Obviously it didn't make the click sound either. I replaced it with a new old stock one and it hasn't acted up since.

As far as diagnosing, start with the basics and work from there.

Check main ground wires, plugs, wires, dizzy, battery+cables, coil, fuses etc. To test the battery you'll need a voltmeter.

There is a fsm (factory service manual) available online. I'll link it for you.

4th gen 92-96 Service Manual

Good luck, hope this helps.

Re: 1992 honda prelude starting problem

Could be the Idle Air Control Valve -- that's a pretty common issue. The IACV in part functions like a choke, which would explain the difficulty in cold weather, but not in hot. Search on it and you'll find lots of discussion.
