Car Won't Start. Diagnostics all OK - Abnormal results - HELP! Don't know what to do.

Hi folks!

My current problem would be a little more abnormal. Sort of my car is behaving strange. It stopped working 3 years ago (cranked but wont start) so I decided to make a full rebuild. By that time I considered the low compression on the cylinders and oil smoke already on the exhaust was the cause but... after rebuild i'm not that sure if that was "the only cause" to be honest.

My car is a H23a1 Frankeinstein Swap with H22a4 head on it. Worked fine for almost a year. A Balancer Shafts axial clearance made a lubrification problem so I did the rebuild.

Engine was built in a specialized shop here, following Honda Manual clearances and torque. Everything pristine. Even the Honing Process and the correct stones were used.

After rebuilt, car worked like charm. Half Crank was enough to make it start. Runned well around 100 miles, when after 3 days we decided to make a "road test" on it in a touge section, but with rev limit at 4.5k to not rape it during engine softening period.

During that, one injector stuck open for some reason. Car arrived back with idling issues characteristic of such problem. Injector exchanged, no big issue.

The problem starts in the other day at the morning. It cranks, but wont start.
Sparks good. Distributor good. Coil, good. Fuel, good. Injectors pulsing. It have air, fuel and compression to start, but it wont. Cranks forever. Check all engine bay grounds. Did extra ones just in case. Nothing.

To make things worse, ECU don't throw any CelCode of a possible problem. Almost all sensors were good and the car stood there stopped since february with more diagnostics all good and no clue what it was about.

2 months ago, the mechanics brought an electrician guy from another center to help out and in a rage moment, they pulled the engine harness violently and that for some reason made the car work again like new.

Well, we discussed it and was obvious. Problem was with engine Harness. Car worked for more 24h and after standing still during that night, it wont work anymore in the morning.

Bought a new harness, exchanged it. Nothing.

Bought new plugs, nothing. Female, Male, nothing. Did electrical checkups, and turns all all sensors are reading exceptionally good. Still, car cranks, everything works but it wont start.

We even exchanged for a more powerfull batery. Car cranked so fast that it almost worked mechanicaly by itself. You could heard the "plop" on the exhaust like if was almost working by induction, and the engine turns heavy all the time.

Compression test results were good. Same compression on all cylinders. We even considered the camshaft puley key, maybe somehow stress on that would make it break and put the car out of opperational range, like if it was one teeth ahead or something. None. All ok.

Fuses are good. Relays, good.

I have 3 different ECUS, 3 different Distributors, almost all head extra parts related to induction, sensors, etc.

Car wont work with a P13, P14 and a Socketed P72.

One thing left to Open would be the Ignition Switch, but I think maybe this is unlikely to be the issue, considering everything works on the car, and even all the sensors are reading normal.

We even put a p28 with Hondata to check all sensor reading.

I mean, the car has everything to work, but it wont. I'm not sure what could cause this.

I consider it has to be an intermittent issue because It worked short after the rebuild for some days. And later on, months later, worked again. Cranked fine all day, dozens of times. Guys on the Shop even used it to work that day, going around town with no issue.

I drove myself the car after this rebuild. Saw it working. No noise, no nothing. Was like brand new.

I mean, you guys are my last hope. Neither the mechanics know the issue. we never saw something like that before.

I am missing something here? Someone could suggest any other tip?

Thanks a lot guys! Counting on you.

sounds like a 4th gen curse. have you checked the main relay? if you have fuel compression and spark the only thing I can think of is timing being off or the firing order being off

Yup! Everything has been checked. Timming is right. Fuel is right. Dizzy area and spark as well.

Yeah, is a 4th Gen Prelude.

You may have to find a really good tech that knows how to use a scope. You need to check all sensors like cam position and other sensors are getting their pulses at the right time. I watched a good video on youtube of a guy using a scope to diagnose a car start and die problem. He found the timing belt was one tooth off. Just regular troubleshooting this problem showed everything good, fuel pressure, timing and spark looked at individually looked good.
