H23A Swap, how can I retain the Auto, what ECU?

Due to a knee injury a manual is not an option.

My son is swapping in a JDM H23A, we have it sitting on the engine stand in the garage waiting to find if we can use it with the Auto that came in his 93 with the H23A1.

I have read that the trans will bolt up. Can I use the flexplate and torque converter from the car?

I have read quite a bit on needing a new P28 (or other options) for ECU, but they all seem to be talking about only Manual transmissions. A local tuner here said that he can't do a tune for an Auto. Is an Auto an option with this swap?

Hopefully I am making this a big deal and it does not need to be, and we can move on. We want to get it installed this weekend.

Thank you,
Jared

You should call Hmotors online and ask them if they have any ECU's, those engines came with automatic transmissions

This is a 93 car, OBDI.

The engine is a 99 and came with the auto ECU, but it is OBDII.

I know those are true facts, but am I mistaken in thinking that I can't use the ECU that came with the engine?

Thank you,
Jared

Re: H23A Swap, how can I retain the Auto, what ECU?

It can be done. My son had an H22 from an OBD2 car mated to an auto. I can't say for certain how the 95 ecu was harnessed to the engine. But do know it involved a toggle switch to turn off the OBD2 induced CEL.

Look around the 5th gen section to see how folks converted those cars to OBD1. I believe there is an add on by like Ryewire or somebody to make the connection(s).

Now far as torque covertor etc, that will have to be determined by a trial and error method using first the stuff that should've been attached to your new (to you) H23. There isn't much info on the VTEC 2.3 mated to an auto tranny for Preludes. But Accord forums may have info.

Btw, my 97 H22 has a 5speed from the H23a1 bolted to it, so the auto will bolt up to your replacement engine.

Best regards, and may the wind be at your back during the swap process.

Re: H23A Swap, how can I retain the Auto, what ECU?

ANSWER!!!
Convert engine to obd1 (same process as obdII h22a to obdI h22a swap) get your hands on an obdI h22a ecu chip it and tune it for use with h23a. yes you can use the auto and the flex plate I would add an extra trans cooler to handle the extra power. The obdI cars have a separate transmission computer it handles most everything obd2 cars it's all one computer I just converted a f22b dohc from a manual obdI to an auto obd2
