T Belt Questions

I'm going through fixing stuff on my 95 Si. Currently I'm knee-deep in the timing belt job and have a couple of questions.

The t-belt was loose, so I decided it was time to do it. After removing the stubborn crank bolt and getting the covers off, I lost tension and my helper advanced the crank a bit by hand (maybe 3-4 teeth) before I realized the cams weren't turning. I had him stop immediately and put the cams both to the proper TDC position (arrow pointing upward) by turning the cogs by hand, so I could feel if anything hit with the interference design. I was able to do them by hand and didn't feel anything other than the usual resistance of the valve springs. My next part is going to be putting the crank at TDC and I just want to make sure that it's alright to advance it slowly by hand as long as I don't feel any resistance. Is this OK to do with a small ratchet, assuming I don't feel anything that feels like piston/valve contact? If not, what's the best way to go about getting it right without bending any valves?

Another question is about the CKP sensor. I pulled my lower timing cover off and the 4 wires leaving the cover are cut. Is this some sort of a mod? Do I need it/should I repair it? I couldn't even find the harness where they're supposed to be connected to! The car ran great before I put it down for the t-belt service and massive front end suspension refresh. If I need it, I'd like to order it and fix everything before I put it back together.

Re: T Belt Questions

You will be fine spinning the crank by hand or with a small ratchet. you will need to turn the crank approximately 180* before finding any valves if you have the cams in the tdc #1 position.

Sounds like your block is from a 97-01. 92-96 had the ckp in the distributor. This is why you cant find the missing harness.

Re: T Belt Questions

OK, thank you for the info!

That would make sense about the CKP. Is it OK then to remove any/all of the CKP components under the timing cover?
