Bad Rear Lower Control Arm (Driver's side)

Hello All!
This is my first time posting on the board, although I've been visiting this site for years looking for information whenever I experience a problem with the "Red Sonya" That's my prelude's name I have a 1992 S model, I bought used in 1995, one previous owner. I now have 195,000K on her, she needs a paint job, but structurally, she is a good car, I take care of her!

About 8 months ago, I noticed a little "swaying" from the rear, like the back of the car is off balance? Anyways, I took it to a honda dealership in January 2015, they told me it was the lower control arm, which has been discontinued! I've looked everywhere! CarID, junkyards, I can't find the part! I thought I found the part from one website, ordered it, took it to the shop, it wasn't the right part! I have attached the schematics the mechanic gave me. I need help finding this part. Does anyone know how long it takes for this part to just completely fail? Would it be advisable to replace the passenger side rear lower control arm at the same time? I would hate to have to park my baby and buy a new car because I can't drive her anymore! I just submitted for Historical plates too, she's 23 years old now Any assistance is appreciated!

Re: Bad Rear Lower Control Arm (Driver's side)

Ahhhh, don't fret mon-frair...

It seems those dudes at the factory were busy putting the same part on all dem 4th gen Preludes...

^^ zip-zip...next

I looked at honda parts now.com and found the control arm part number, typed it in the search bar and found they used that part in many-a-prelude.

It's an expensive little so n so when you buy it from Honda. But it put up with your Baltimore streets for 20+ years, so why not get the best?

No need to thank me...just thank an English teacher sometime for putting up with us during those basic grammar semesters.

Welcome to the site.

YAY!!! Of course I have to thank you and I'm sorry about the double post...at work trying to multitask without wine...it's never a good thing! OK, so if I understand you correctly, this part is interchangeable between the model years you listed? If that's the case, that's the best news I've heard! You had the same exact schematics pic I have, only I thought it was part 24/27, I guess I will have to have the mechanic verify for sure, so I order the right part! Should I replace the passenger side one too? What are your thoughts?

Re: Bad Rear Lower Control Arm (Driver's side)

Your mechanic will know.
I simply guessed...

But showed the list in case it was indeed the 24/27 part, which is discontinued...but junkyards have high mileage 4g cars showing up right often with broken auto trannies.
Also don't rule out aftermarket bushings to rebuild them.

I signed up for emails from my local junkyards who notify me when Preludes arrive.
Try it.

Also try car-part.com for used parts.

Others may chime in to say where you can get aftermarket stuff...maybe try your local NAPA store too.
I'm not a suspension guy for these cars in particular, as I haven't reached that part of my restore, but I think you can get parts from some companies that sell parts to make the car handle better...including poly urethane bushings for the arms and such.

Others will have to chime in...tassievteclude comes to mind...or Lindso.

Re: Bad Rear Lower Control Arm (Driver's side)

You may be in luck and the lower control arm might just need new bushings. The bushings are rubber with a metal sleeve and do wear out over time, would certainly explain the floaty back end. The arm itself is a very heavy and solid chunk of cast steel, it don't wear out it just breaks. Take a look at parts 22, 23 and 37, these can all be replaced for less than half of the cost of the whole arm and shouldn't be too much trouble if done with a press, all of them might not need to be replaced either.
