Tach and Speedo problem

I tried the search but all threads seemed to be problems after some sort of swap.

While driving my tach and speedo suddenly went dead at the same time. The speedo would work if I let off the gas but would go dead as soon as I pressed the gas again. The cruise control also stopped working at the same time. Car is a 95 VTEC.

Anyone know of what would cause these to stop working at the same time? It must be one common thing, too unlikely for more than one thing to go out at exactly the same time. All other gauges work.

Re: Tach and Speedo problem

Update.

I drove it again today and the radio stopped working, the right turn signal won't wok, and the fuel and temp gauges "pulse" with the engine. Obviously I have some electrical gremlin in there. Hoping someone knows of a common denominator with these issues to save me a little troubleshooting time. The radio and a keyless entry are the only things on the car that are not stock, they were in there when I bought the car in March.

Re: Tach and Speedo problem

There are 2 "Common" denominators for these malfunctions...

One possibility is that one or more connectors going to the back of the Instrument Cluster is/are loose...

OR...

It could be the Ground wire(s) are loose...

And I believe that the ground wires are right behind the radio.

Not saying that these are the ONLY possible causes, but it'd be the first place I started looking.

Re: Tach and Speedo problem

Try jiggling the key in the ignition when it happens.

Turn signals randomly stopped working in my 88 Taurus. Jiggling the key got 'em working again.
If it works, thank an old person next time you see one.

Re: Tach and Speedo problem

Thanks for the info. I did find two bad grounds. That fixed it temporarily but then the same thing happened again. Turns out a bad alternator will do the same thing. All better now.
