Lower Ball Joint Help

So here is the deal, I am currently trying to replace the front lower ball joints on my 1994 SI. I can not seem to get the lower ball joint out. I have tried used the ball joint presser/remover tool from Autozone, i have tried prying it and hammering it out with a 4lb sledge hammer. Is there a trick or anything else I can try before I am forced to put it back to together, tow it to Honda and pay $600 for them to replace the two front lower ball joints. Thanks.

Re: Lower Ball Joint Help

Do you have a bottle jack? You can jack up the car at the ball joint stud, with the castle nut on but loosened, spray some WD-40 or other penetrant on the joint to help loosen the shaft, and then whack the joint with a hammer.

And yeah, they can be a pain to get out!

Re: Lower Ball Joint Help

Go to Sears and get a Leisle pickle fork set.

^^ you already have the hammer.

In addition to what Tony said:
Saying you are banging on it from the front bumper towards the trunk...
Place a cinder block on the opposite side of where you are banging so it absorbs much of the flex of the suspension. When you are hitting it 'while not backed up' it's like trying to drive a nail in a warped board. No fun. With it backed up it's like driving a nail into a board braced against another board. Much easier.

And...it may take as much as a few dozen good whacks before it "pops" loose. You will know when it pops.

Took me like 45-50 good whacks to get mine apart the first time.

Replace the castle nut. Grease the joint with anti sieze (so it'll be easier in the future) and repllace the cotter pin.

Re: Lower Ball Joint Help

Do the WD-40 thing, then get the whole knuckle/hub off the car, and go bash the ball joints out on the concrete. That is what I did for the front.

Re: Lower Ball Joint Help

Sorry for not mentioning the pickle-fork thing... Figured he already was using one and just couldn't get it loose...

You could always GET A BIGGER HAMMER!
