(Car Troubles) New Prelude Owner

So i just bought a 92 Prelude for $1200. Upon purchasing the car I was told it had a bad battery, and a key ignition i had to play with to get cranked. I managed to get the car halfway home before it gave out. I've replaced the battery, and was told that the key troubles are due to the faulty switch behind where the actual key is turned (unsure of part name). When i crank the car it makes a click noise on the upper left of the engine, and my lights etc come on, but the car doesn't start. Having just bought this car I'm not sure whats wrong, but if anyone could give me an idea, it'd be greatly appreciated. The guy told me it was his daily driver, but id assume he knew what the issues were with it when he sold it, and just gave me the minor details (welcome to the world of used cars) Any feedback is appreciated.

Re: (Car Troubles) New Prelude Owner

Congrats on your purchase.

It's quite likely your alternator has quit charging the battery for one reason or another.
Alternators fail on Hondas and Hyundais, Fords and Ferraris, Mazdas and Mercedes.
More times than not there can be enough juice to activate lights but not start the car.
Owner may or may not have known.
Could be as simple as the belt is loose, but not likely.
You should charge your battery overnight on a trickle charger.
Also check the wires from the starter to the battery and the ground from the transmission to the battery. Make sure they are clean and have no breaks anywhere.

Once you charge the battery if the car doesn't start that's a whole 'nother thing. Could be starter is failing.
If it does start test the alternator at the battery to see if it gets about 13 or so volts.

The thing you aint sure the name of is the 'ignition switch'.

All Gen. Prelude Service Manuals
^^ service manual should help ya.

Re: (Car Troubles) New Prelude Owner

Well I just bought a brand new battery, and upon purchase the guy said he just replaced the alternator (but that's hearsay, especially when your trying to sell a car). I know the car was low on fuel when I bought it, and it was at least 20 miles from its final destination. Combined with my new car jitters, and me reacquainting myself with a standard, I may have just ran out of fuel. The Battery it originally had, had a dead cell, however I do fear it might be a starter issue due to the car having a funky ignition as it is. I hope its something as silly as needing gas, other wise I'll be pretty upset. I appreciate the feedback, and I'll keep you posted on the issue.

None of that last one matches up with anything you said in the 1st one...

Re: (Car Troubles) New Prelude Owner

it could be main relay, starter motor, alternator, fuel pump, clutch safety switch.. ect. look up each one of these things and how to diagnose them. also check the voltage of the new battery before anything else just to be sure.

Re: (Car Troubles) New Prelude Owner

I had to read that post a couple times, if it's outta gas, you have a big digital gauge in the middle of your dash telling you how much gas there is!

Re: (Car Troubles) New Prelude Owner

I put gas in the tank, and am replacing the battery cables, due to one being stripped. The engine, and starter are fine, my issues seem to be electrical. I apologize for confusing you with the Gasoline post, however being new to the Prelude, I wasn't sure how accurate that electronic fuel gauge was when the car wasn't running.

Re: (Car Troubles) New Prelude Owner

Never trust the fuel gauge...unless the buyer says 'hey I just put in x gallons' you should always stop at a filling station (regardless of age, brand or condition) and add a few gallons..but hey, it happens.

So is the car running now?

Re: (Car Troubles) New Prelude Owner

Well I've replaced the battery, the cables, put fuel in it, and its still not running. When I start it, it still makes the same funky click noise (almost like a spark noise) in the top of the engine bay near the drivers side. When I bought this car it ran fine, but it gave out halfway home, and I still cant get it running.

Re: (Car Troubles) New Prelude Owner

UPDATE: Replaced the starter with a new one and the car started up. Outside of the funky ignition (replacement ordered), and some slight oil leakage. I'm now the owner of a running 92 Prelude.
