Hello. I'm from Louisiana, but live in Oregon for now. I bought my very first prelude in 2009 before I moved. I didn't have any time to work on I'm hoping it's not gonna cost too much to do what I need to do. It's a 92 4th gen lude that I bought from a friend's brother and I'm not sure what all he did to it. I know he put a H22 in it, but I'm not sure what else he did. The check engine light stays on, I have to keep disconnecting the battery cables so the battery doesn't drain, the a/c and heater doesn't work, neither one of the fans don't work, the air bag on steering wheel is busted (in the trunk is the middle of the steering wheel including an air bag), I want to take all the NOS stuff he had hooked up under the hood off, there isn't a firewall, when my car sits while running smoke comes in the front of the car, no antenna, no trunk lock, and no matter if I put low profile tires or regular 15" tires on...they rub when I turn. Can you please help?

Holy cow! You got your hands full.

What did they tie you up, blindfold you, take $800 out of your pocket, drop you off in the trunk of the car in your town and leave a note saying 'take this car or mom gets concrete shoes'?

Or did you knowingly buy this mess?

I unfortunately bought this mess. I desperately needed a vehicle and all I needed to fix at the time was a new manifold and brakes to drive it. He didn't tell me all that was wrong with it. Granted that was my stupidity. All he said was it was a Japanese racing motor and he use to race it. I know I more than likely wasted my money, but I'm stuck now.

More than likely you've been ripped off but if you're determined to fix it then be prepared for a lot of time, hard work and probably money. If it isn't too far gone then it might just be a good car again.

If you haven't done already, download the service manual and be prepared to read it a lot. You can get a copy here: All Gen. Prelude Service Manuals

The H22 is a good motor, but hardly a "Japanese race motor". If it's been on the track then it's probably done some hard miles. Get rid of that NOS junk for sure, it really depends how it's been installed as to how to delete it though.

I'd look at doing a compression test and leakdown test to see how many ponies have escaped.

There are so many issues it's hard to know where to start. The troubling one is the lack of firewall. Do you mean there is some big holes in it or is has been completely cut out?

If you can diagnose the check engine light by shorting out the service connector behind the centre console then that might help us out. If it was a track car then it could very well have had an EGR, FITV, IACV, AC and/or PS delete, these are common mods to a track car and the first three will cause a CEL on the stock ECU. An AC delete would explain the lack of AC, but it might be worth seeing if there is still a heater core in it. It may have simply not been connected when the engine swap was done.

The battery drain issue could be a dodgy earth or short somewhere in the electronics.

The white smoke might be a coolant leak, oil is usually a blue colour. This may sound dumb but what does the smoke smell like? You should be able to tell if it is oil, fuel or coolant that way.

Has it been lowered at all? Does it have coilovers or some other major suspension mods? You might be able to adjust it back up if it has been done properly, otherwise if it is all stock then you might have some busted bushes causing it to sit low.

The minor ones like the airbag, antenna and trunk lock once again depend on what has been removed. If the SRS wiring is in tact then it might just be a matter of putting the airbag back in, likewise with the antenna.

Some pics would really REALLY help out, I personally would like to see the engine bay to see exactly what is left in there. I know with my car I've gone to great lengths to delete a lot of components in an effort to save weight (because racecar) and I'll never be able to put it back to stock. I just hope for your sake your friends brother hasn't gone to the same trouble I have.

Well,it hasn't been on a track. He raced it down one of main streets back home. Yeah I don't want any of the NOS crap. The firewall has big holes in it. See I didn't know where to even start to see what's what...lol. It's white smoke coming inside and it smells like coolant. So does that mean I should do a radiator flush or just go ahead and get a new one? He did lower it quite a bit. I'm pretty sure it has coilovers,but have to make sure. I'm not sure if the SRS is hooked up because the driver's air bag was deployed so I'm assuming he unhooked it. I will definitely load some pics.

Dang, that thing is a mess. Thanks for the pics. That's good that it hasn't seen a track but probably more troubling that this guy used to street race for funsies.

The coolant leak could be from anywhere in the system, not necessarily the radiator. Can you see any signs of water coming out when the engine is running? My guess is that it's pissing out of somewhere on to the exhaust manifold and creating lots of steam. Coolant shouldn't vaporise by itself even at operating temps unless of course there's no coolant left and it's just water, then it could be pushing steam out from under the radiator cap as the water boils.

Where is the power steering pump? It should be above the alternator. I can still see the PS lines in there so IDK WTF is going on. Is the steering very heavy? The AC lines look like they're still in there too but I can't make out the compressor. Have you checked all the fuses?

Has the battery been relocated or have you just taken it out to stop it going flat? If it has been relocated then it looks like it hasn't been done very well, that red cable is tiny and the positive terminal could quite easily touch the bodywork and start a fire. There looks to be a pretty ghetto earthing kit in there too so any of that could be causing the battery drain issues. There looks to be an extra cable draped over the distributor too, not sure what that's for.

It looks as though the NOS just plumbs into the intake piping and possibly the intake manifold, not the injectors, so it should be fairly straight forward to remove it and plug the holes. The firewall looks uhh, there. What makes you think it's not?

Ugh, hood pins. Is that radiator cable tied in place? You certainly have your work cut out for you. If you want a project then it looks like a great way to get your hands dirty, but a cheap reliable daily driver I suspect it ain't.

If it runs your not doing that bad. Research and get your hands dirty. Im assuming you know your way around a wrench. Of you dont wanna put the money in get money back by selling parts. With the CEL in how does it run? Im sure the laughing gas didn't increase its lifespan.

Man you need money, another car, and lots of time, if you want to get this poor lude roadworthy again.

Its got potential but you got to pull up your sleeves and get dirty.

Donate the car to charity. The CEL is from the (possible) various vacuum leaks when they removed the NOS system. Also the car needed to be chipped or flashed to maintain said nos system. You need an entirely untouched ecu and work from there.

The heat and fans / firewall / ground - drain issues are an afternoon job if you can sneak the material by the intake manifold and trace the grounds. Honestly though identifying the problems are the easy part. Use the online manuals, but identify the engine used. H22A, H22A1 through H22A7, identifier can be found on the block itself, usually under the disributor cap or next to the header... Good luck

Yeah, I have coolant in the radiator. I don't see anything coming out anywhere, but I haven't had time to put it on my ramps yet. At this point I'm not sure if it will go onto the ramps because of it lowered so much. I'm afraid it'll bottom out on my muffler,but I'm going to try Sunday. I took out the battery so it wouldn't go flat. I'm also going to take my tires off to see what lowering kit he put on. Hopefully they're coilovers. There is no power steering,he took that out. There is air blowing out of the vents when I turn on the air, but it's not cold. I'm also going to check ALL the fuses. Awesome...well I'm going to take the NOS crap off, but any suggestions on what to plug my intake with once I take the NOS off? I actually just put that radiator hose on a few days ago because the other one was a hose that melted to the radiator. I know I shouldn't have bought the damn thing, but now I have it. Time to get dirty.

Oh yeah, it runs. Yeah I know a few things about engines, I'm baffled about this one though..lol. Sorry, but what is a CEL and where is it..lol? I'm not sure what that filter is either. I was wondering myself.

Thank you everyone for your help. I can't wait to mess with it. I'm going to see what I can figure out.
