New here, looking for advice

I just started looking at aftermarket stuff for my prelude, and have pretty much no idea where to start so I found this site and signed up hoping I could get some help from people who have been there / done that. I'm looking for recommendations, as well as places to find good parts. I'll start with the fact that I know as close to nothing about aftermarket mod parts for a car a...well, a person who knows nothing about aftermarket parts for a car. Figured I would start my search here to see if there was anything resembling a consensus - at the very least of what to avoid.

The Car:
I have a stock 1992 fws prelude (even the stereo is original, with only a tape deck). Its been in the family since it rolled off the lot and only has 44k miles on it.

First: Any good suppliers / reviewer sites so that I can ask less questions in the future.

Second: Things I would like to change in the near term and get recommendations for:

Lights:
Front are way too dim. I've been thinking HID/Halogen initially but would happily go LED if there are good options that won't break the bank. Rear lights to match style of front.
e.g. http://www.amazon.com/Honda-Prelude-...ype=automotive

Suspension:
Different shocks obviously, is there anything else in the suspension that typically needs to be replaced as long as I am there? Just trying to plan ahead/budget before I start taking things apart.

Antenna:
Mine is broken (up) thinking about replacing with a short non-retractable one. For anyone who has done this, how is the reception? and once again, brands to avoid/ look for?
e.g Universal Car Antenna Stubby Antenna Scion TC Radio GPS | eBay

Thanks in advance,
-Mac

Your car belongs in a museum. Don't change a thing.

It would be a shame to turn that nice example of a virtually untouched show piece into just another fan boy statement of how to screw up another nice car.

Stay stock if you wanna fix it up. 10 years from now you'll be glad you did.

Antenas are us.com has oem style that work well.
Wanna do HID? buy some other housings and do those. Keep the originals unmolested.

Go to your local junkyard or search at car-part.com for some parts as you need them.

Dude, seriously. These cars with only 44k miles deserve to be kept as original as practical.

Re: New here, looking for advice

I don't really disagree. The headlights are a safety thing, I live in the country and with no street lights the visibility just isn't good enough. I do intend to swap out the housing / whole assembly. I used to have a 95 accord which I bought with aftermarket lights which were crappy though, so I want to avoid that a repeat.

I have no desire to lower the car either, put a body kit on it, etc. I do find the suspension a little loose and would like to tighten it up hence my questions on that.

I'm an old man, at this point I just want to make the car safer and more pleasant as my daily driver.

Re: New here, looking for advice

Honda Parts at Honda Parts Now | Genuine OEM Honda Auto Parts
A source for oem stuff.
You can cross match by typing in a part # in the search bar and it populates other cars said part was used on.
Helps you know what other cars shared parts when your junkyard is ludeless.
The same can be done using their Acura site as well.

Let me just say I hope my initial response was not too offensive. More times than not, youngsterz who've just acquired a sure enough gem join, enquiring how they can make their car look and act like what they see in the fast & furious series in order to impress a bunch droopy drawered, crooked hat wearin' wanna be gangstas...

You say you're old? Being 50+ I can relate. Car's hard enough getting in and out of stock, much less dropped even more.

Now if the option of replacing your current set up with new original equipment doesn't fit what you are after, there are plenty of alternatives. Most folks here use stiffeners at each end as well as coil over shocks for a stiffer cornering experience.
Sway bars are like shocks. You can go with new oem, buy some super stiff kind or add to what's already on the car.
Try King motorsports.com for some ideas.
It may be that bushings are worn or some of those old joints are flexing more than they used to. It could end up one of those 'creeping elegance' things, where one thing leads to another and soon you find yourself wondering when it will ever end.

http://www.aptuned.com/blog/coilover...ts-better.html
^^ hopefully this will help.

If you don't want another electric antena, that one you cited will work fine. But if you like the electric one, those at antenas are us are good quality at resonable prices.

The headlights you cited look like they'd be just fine.

Re: New here, looking for advice

You'll find that you learn a lot, quick, here. I just got my Prelude in November, knowing squat about it. Really the only things i knew about cars before that came from a Mercury Cougar forum i joined cause i was considering one of those for a while (Prelude's waaaaaaay better). Less than a year ago, if you asked me what a transmission is, i probably would've told you it's something similar to an alternator...

A car in near mint condition like you have doesn't need to be ruined. IF you decide on doing some minor modification to it, keep every last stock part you take off of it. The only things i've actually removed from my car are the front blinkers, side marker lights, and intake resonator box; and they're all sitting on a shelf in my garage.
