Guage issues?

Hello all,

New member helping a friend. Ex CRX and Civic owner but now working on a 94 SI auto. Radiator top tank was leaking, put new rad and cap in and all seemed fine. Both fans work when I turn on AC, my laser thermometer reads 235 at the thermostat housing and fans did not kick on, top hose reads around 190. Gauge on dash was at half. Gave car back, friends kids drove in minor stop and go traffic and pegged the digital gauge. Got it back today and let let run up to 220/235 at therm housing, no fan. Gauge went to red, let it run for another minute. checked with laser and it was at 235 on therm housing, 190 at upper hose. Turned car off and ten seconds later fan kicked on for about 3 or 4 minutes. I'm starting to suspect the gauge in the dash is faulty and the car is not really getting that hot. What are your thoughts? I have a new sending unit but don't think it will make a difference.

Thanks in advance.

Changing the sending unit is not a bad idea. But you can test the one in the car now.

All Gen. Prelude Service Manuals
^^ the manual tells you how to test it.

Re: Guage issues?

I decided to go over some basics again just to be sure so I re bled the system. As I was squeezing the lower hose to check flow I noticed a tiny leak I never saw before. I was coming from the electronic air control valve hose. $9.12 dealer only part. 12 hours later it was in. Car now runs correctly. Gauge stays at halfway mark therm housing reading after about 20 minutes is 150 and fans kicked on and off like normal.

Re: Guage issues?

i had a leak problem too and its insane how a little air in the coolant system will screw things up ... I would do a good air bleed to that system if i were you ..!

Re: Guage issues?

Yep, the reverse cooling system can suck air in pretty easy. I did bleed it after I replaced the hose. All good now. Thanks!
