Engine noise

Hello. I'm having some trouble with my car. Its making a noise when revved to ~3k. I guess I'd describe it as a knock. Oil pressure is good and so is the compression. Motor is an H23A has ~80k. Video is linked below hope the sound quality is good enough. I'm pretty sure you guys are going to confirm my fears that it's a rod knock, but just to be sure. I'm just not sure because it continues to make noise even at operating temp.

Re: Engine noise

Fidelity was fine.
Can't say for sure what it is. But something is bouncing around in your engine for sure.

Using a lot of oil lately?

Re: Engine noise

Damn. Oil consumption is average, a little bit every fill up just to top off. Would pulling the oil pan be the surest way to tell?

Re: Engine noise

Start by changing your oil. Check for excess metals.
You may need to pour it through a fine mesh strainer (paper filter) like car painters use to get air bubbles out of the paint they are about to use. Should be readily available.

Do you hear it all the time or just when accelerating? That was the only time I could hear it in the video.
Oil lamp on? Can you do an oil pressure test to make dang certain it's not just a pump not working proper?

You have what sounds like something in there coming loose. Perhaps a connecting rod. Maybe a mechanics stethoscope can help you pinpoint where the sound is coming from.
That'll tell you whether to pull the pan off the engine or the whole motor out, which you should probably go ahead and start figuring on.

Re: Engine noise

I checked for material in the oil through cheese cloth that was folded several times to create a fine filter. No shiny material in the oil. I did a pressure test and read 60psi at 3000rpm and ~40psi at idle. I only hear it when accelerating. Ill check with a stethoscope this weekend.

Re: Engine noise

i have a bad ac compressor, and it sounds like a rod knock, changes as i put the ac on, but i dont think this is it in your case, like byk said, souns like something def is loose in there, drop the pan, and check the rod bearings you might get lucky

Re: Engine noise

Hate to do it, but I'm going to have to sell the Prelude. It's been a fun ride, but time to get a grown up car. Maybe I'll get another Prelude in the future. Thanks for all the info.

Gotta do what ya gotta do.

Better to pass it on to a good home than scrap it or worse...let it rot.

It was nice having ya, hope you stay in touch. Let us know how the story ends anyway. Please.
