Newbie to preludes

I picked up a 92 prelude with 96k miles. Its an auto, which sucks but I got it for 1000 at an auction. Its a little rusty in the rear quarters, and basically needs some body work and paint, (thats stuff I know and have done). I looked it over and it seemed alright, I jumped in on the bidding early and not many were interested I think because its auto and has the rust. Its got power everything, sun roof, and has air but it doesnt work.

The front end is squeeky, so if I decide to keep it, I will replace all the front end stuff thats bad. The motor smokes (it didnt when it was sitting there running through the auction) I get it home after a 50 mile drive, and check the oil its really over full and foamy. Me being optimistic I hope its smoking due to being over filled.

My questions, is it common for these motors to smoke, even with only 96k? The smoke is blue so to me its oil because it gets worse under throttle. Seems like a lot of good info here hopefully can learn a lot.

the blue smoke is probably a sign of the oil burn.. which engine is in it?

you're probably looking at oil burning. and no, it's not normal for a 96k motor to do that. if you have a si, then you have a h23a1. i used to have that motor... all the way up to 140k or something like that before the dealer detonated my motor. never saw blue smoke. check your seals for starters.

I just checked its got the h23a. The oil is so overfull it isnt funny. Its about 3 inches up the dip stick higher than what it should be. Thats probbaly the result of someone trying to hide some noise, or just being a dumb ass. If I cant get rid of the smoke, I will sell it.

I changed the oil tonight and started taking off some of the cheap "pin stripe" stickers. I doesnt seem to be burning oil, but it does have some white smoke now. Granted it was about 40 degrees out but it was warmed up. I think I have fallen in love with the car, besides it needs a lot of work, suspension, and body wise. It has a lot of oil leaks, but it shifts good, and would be a great daily, so my s10 can sit in the garage, everyone thinks I am crazy for driving a bagged truck daily but I like it.

A few more questions, what kind of life is to be expected from an auto tranny on one of these? And how hard is a head gasket change. I get this weird pleasure out of buying junk cars, dirt bikes, jet skis, motor cycles and pretty much anything. I like to fix them up and go all through them and make them like new. It ends up costing more than if I just went out and bought something but so far I have 1000$ in the car, if I do the body work, paint it and fix the suspension and address the mechanical issues. I might have another 1000$? Is it worth it?
