Turbo questions.

Im looking into putting a turbo on my car and I dont mean some little thing but rather a setup that will take me to the range of 500 whp and before people say it cant be done i know it can. Im doing all the research I can before diving into this monumentous challenge. Currently mycar is a 95 si with the h23. I plan on buying a second h23 to teardown and rebuild into a turbo worthy motor then swap it in. Ive read all about block resleeving and have heard that darton sleeves will be able to withstand 50 psi. Ive also read that the ringlands is the common failure in turbo'd motors. Any good pistons that can withstand the same psi as the sleeves? Also any other info is appreciated so that I know what I need to prevent catastrophic failure. I know that everything that can be strengthened needs to be and will be. Im not worried about cost so post the best parts available. I want to do this once and do it right so I know it wont be cheap. Any info helps.

Re: Turbo questions.

You're researching, but what's your question?

Pick out your parts, speak with your tuner and run it all past them, order said parts, and commence the build.

My question was is there any good pistons that could handle 50 psi without failing?

Re: Turbo questions.

There's a fellow over at Honda-Tech who has (if memory serves) 650 in his civic. You might search out his story over there.
I used to get emails about it a while ago. He had his setup build up boost as rpm's increased. He'd been a year (and numerous pulls) without any mishaps.

Re: Turbo questions.

Lol, and To the wheels!
But there is some good **** there, oil squirters and junk blabla..

OP, just read up on 30 builds to begin with and once u have somewhat of an idea of what YOU want. Take the best things out of all those builds, and incorporate them into your build. Sleeves are very important, one hint from me would be, don't cheap out on important stuff. You can't cut corners on internals. Get to know what unsprung weight is and the importance of balancing parts. If you want true reliable power.. It will cost alot once instead of alot many times.

2 words...

Larry Widmer.

Some of us know of Larry when he lived on Junior Johnsons farm and built reliable engines for him when I was a pup...built motors for Penske Indy cars...or for the Elliott family pre-restrictor racing and cars were nearing 200 mph...Bill ran 212 average with an Endyne idea. Cosworth...then Honda as a hobby in the late 80's...his ideas are used to this day by Honda R&D engineers.

Endyn B20 Build - Tech - Honda Tuning Magazine

350 n/a is not typical...but can be done with enough cash and enough know how...

Re: Turbo questions.

Hey I think the most important thing to take away from this, is that no matter what piston you use, IT WILL WEAR OUT! If you are going to build an extreme setup, and use it solely for that purpose, expect to be changing internal parts out yearly or sooner. If you are building an extreme setup that you drive around town casually then get in on it over the weekends for a few minutes at the time, then the parts will last you longer. If you build an extreme setup and are just doing burnouts all the time, your parts will wear out quick. It is not uncommon for high HP setups to have block failures and blow holes out of the crankcase while under boost. If you plan on adding Nitrous, add a 30% quicker wear out rate to all your parts.

It all depends on how you want to drive it once the build is done.

A good piston to look for are forged and have ceramic coatings on the skirts, or any other kind of heat dissipating material on them. The Rod you want to be forged too, and titanium wrist pins. Piston rings are piston rings, there may be some that can withstand the intensity a bit long than the others, but all of them will wear out at some point depending on how you drive.

Obviously as you are aware, sleeving the block is the single most important thing you can do, and make sure you do correctly. Cast Iron sleeves are great, or stronger materials.

Re: Turbo questions.

Double at least. Tuning is not cheap, and if u want big power and a quiet sleeper idle at the lights. U will need a good tuner and it will take a while. Unless u find a good map to flash.

Alot of people run out of money part way through build and finish it off all mickey mouse... That is bad. Of u are ready to spend 10, what's another 3 or 5? Peace of mind is priceless, better than a humiliating bearing or con rod story..
