Prelude 95 Vtec Iddle problems

When cold my prelude idles sort of funny. Say it stays at 2000 rpm then it lowers to 1500 rpm during a couple mins before it settles to about 900 rpms.
Any ideas what could be wrong?

Pretty much any car idles fast when it's cold, then settles down. Older cars settle down gradually. 900 is a bit high. But don't sweat it.

Re: Prelude 95 Vtec Iddle problems

I am having a similar problem with my idle, not exactly the same though, it goes from normal 800ish up to 2000 repeatedly. I read the post you linked and have had no luck fixing the problem completely. It only happens sometimes now though so I think the post did help some but are there any other things that could be causing it? About half the time it idles great, but then it will just randomly start surging again, sometime pushing the gas in till about 4000 and letting off while in neutral will correct it. Any suggestions?

Re: Prelude 95 Vtec Iddle problems

Try the fitv fix shown in the thread. That is typically a cold engine/idle surge issue. But can be plagued when warm.

Also do the iacv 'clean' spoken of in that thread.
Many times the soot that builds up in there causes the little plunger that opens n closes to not seal properly resulting in what your system sees as a vacuum leak.

^^ if it looks like this, clean it.

Here's another thread to chew on.

^^ pretty geeky
This thread here is pure explanations. Check it out.

Re: Prelude 95 Vtec Iddle problems

Definitely check to see if there is any air in the system. Then, the above mentioned fitv and iacv. All the other guys pretty much nailed the possibilities for you. Just take your time and get it right.
