Icon9 Broken Steering Rack?

From my last timing belt issue I had a helper turn the steering wheel while I pushed KnyghtRyder. As he turned the wheel hard to the right, there was a BOOF sound. After I fixed everything else, I drove the car and found that the wheel was off center and would get worse with every bumpy right turn. It got so bad that I could not turn right, the horn doesn't work and the SRS light is on. I can center the steering wheel but it will get off again and I can feel it move when I take right corners.

Today I jacked her up and had another helper turn the wheel left and right while I inspected what was going on under the car. It does not look like the links are stripped or broken so I am guessing that it is the gears in the rack.

Can anyone give me some insight before I take this apart?

Holy hassles bro.

Was your car used in a James Bond movie or something? (Crash off mountain scene)
Somethings always going drastically wrong it seems.

Re: Broken Steering Rack?

I cannot figure out how to remove the cruise control box from the wheel.
I don't want to break anything.

Re: Broken Steering Rack?

That this a ****er. The rough plastic part is a pain to get off. But it does come off. As far as your wheel going off center it kind sounds like the joint near the rack is lose. But the fact your horn and srs light are on kinda seems like the steering wheel its self is lose.
Btw if your srs light is on and the horn is dead, you're going to need a clock spring. They break easy so while junk yard hunting do not turn it at all (they have small plastic stops in them and when broke, like yours everything becomes screwed)

Re: Broken Steering Rack?

Thanks Mizlude, I am on ebay looking for a clock spring. I just need to know if it makes a difference if:
1 - the donor car was manual swift.
2 - the donor car did not have cruise control.

I ask because they look identical from the pic I am seeing.

Thanks y' all!
