Need advice! Thinking of buying a 1996 Prelude!

I WAS a first gen Prelude owner, but had to sell it and move on to other things... However, I realized that I am still a member on the forum!! Which is good because I am hoping to get a second gen Prelude at some point! :D ANYWAYS! That isn't why I posted here!

One of my best friends is asking me to go with him today and look at a 1996 Prelude Si 5 speed with 120,000 miles on it. It is all stock and has a new timing belt, new power steering pump, and new tires, all in the last year. I have owned several Honda's so I know that the timing belt is the one big thing that needs to be done every 105,000? miles. I usually did mine at around 90,000. I know that if you take care of a Honda, it will take care of you! :) From the pictures, the car is in really good shape and is well cared for. Can anyone give me some pointers at what to look for? I am mechanically inclined, but I don't know what the common issues, etc. are on this car. Any pointers are appreciated!

look for oil leaks, make sure it starts up good and drives good, make sure it doesn't overheat.. basic things you wanna check for when buying an older car.

Thank you! Just got a text from the guy saying that the check engine light came on "Car is in shop, probably a sensor they say" I have been down this road before. Check engine lights don't scare me, but kind of a red flag when buying a car!

X2 on the Mobsta post.

96 is obd2 so any old scanner can give you the code. Hopefully just a loose gas cap.

Well, called and talked to the guy yesterday. He said that it was still in the shop. The shop is being real thorough in looking at it because they replaced the timing belt recently. They want to make sure it is nothing they did. He is going to let us know as soon as it comes out. I am hoping that tonight I can go look at this car and hopefully buy it!

Me too! I was supposed to go yesterday, but he never got a ride to pick the car up before the shop closed. It was just an O2 sensor, so that doesn't worry me too much. I've had to do that on a couple of Honda's I had. Quite honestly I am tired of waiting. He has flaked on me three times already. Once for the check engine light, once because he couldn't get a ride, and once for something random. I told him that I would like to come by TODAY. He said he will for sure have the car back and that I can come around 4. We will see!
