Randomly dont want to start

Hey Pz I have a 95 Lude 5 speed H22a4 for 2 years with 90k on the motor but 230k on everything else. It runs great never had a starting problem until now. I go hop in the Lude and turn the key and its like my foot is not on the clutch pedal. No sound except one click and a humming noise. What the hell to do? I'm confused..

Re: Randomly dont want to start

Make sure your battery's fully charged. Check the battery leads to the starter and to ground for any corrosion.

Re: Randomly dont want to start

Is it the Starter that is making the humming sound? Meaning, does it sound like it is turning? It is possible for the Starter to still turn, but not kick out the gear that engages with your flywheel. You MAY be able to just replace the Solenoid that kicks out the starter gear, but easier to just replace the while starter.

Not on Hondas -- they're an integrated unit. Very easy to replace, though.

I wondered about that humming, too, which is why I suggested the battery or the cables. Could be producing insufficient power to energize the starter, but enough to wake it up a little.

Same thing sort of happens to me, gonna get it checked out soon.
I found that if I turn the key at the same time as I'm putting the clutch in it starts.

TRUE. The Solenoid and the starter are integrated, but the Solenoid is removable and replaceable and... You CAN buy them by themself:

1995 HONDA PRELUDE Starter Solenoid

Instead of replacing the WHOLE starter...

1995 HONDA PRELUDE Starter Motor

Either way, if you can hear the starter motor turning but it's NOT turning the engine over, then it's the Solenoid. If the starter is just humming, it could be the Starter Motor itself, a low/dead battery, or loose battery and/or starter cables.

The alternator won't cause your car to NOT start, unless the alternator is bad, and didn't charge your battery back up, thus causing your battery to be dead, and THAT would cause your car to NOT start...

Re: Randomly dont want to start

I have a question. Do the 4th Gens have the clutch safety switch stop pads on the pedal arms? If thet fell out, then it won't be pushing in the safety switch and the starter won't run. Look on your floorboard for a small rubber "button" looking thing. It'll be about double the diameter of a pencil eraser. It might be a white plastic one instead. Depends if its been replaced before or not. You can also lay on the driver floor board and look at the top of the clutch pedal. There are 3 total in our cars, on on the brake pedal arm, one on the lower clutch pedal arm, right next to the brake pedal, and the last one is at the top of the clutch pedal arm. THAT is the one that engages the starter safety switch.

Be sure your E-Brake is on before messing with the clutch pedal!!

Look for those before removing or replacing anything.

Re: Randomly dont want to start

Sometimes my son's 5th gen will 'just not start.'
I mean nothing, nada, zip.

When it does that he takes the key out of the ignition, pushes down on the clutch pedal, then does the key and it fires right up.
We think it's the imobilizer. Try flipping your key over, weird $h1t like that.

Definitely check your clutch safety switch as your car does not have the imobilizer system unless someone put one in.

All Gen. Prelude Service Manuals
^^ the manual will show you the clutch switch as well as the ingition switch

So you get a click, then hum (instead of the other way around)?

Re: Randomly dont want to start

You figure the hum is the fuel pump Jamie?
The click the ingition switch?

When my son's car don't start we hear the hum but no click, that's why we figure imobilizer. Op hears a click, that's why I was thinking clutch safety switch.
But I threw in the manual link so op could maybe see the way they are located and possibly troubleshoot them.

When you turn the ignition to "ON" (posn II), you should hear a hum, then click -- that's the fuel pump and the main relay. Not sure what the other way around would be, unless it's a relay closing to energize the starter, then the starter humming. But glad to hear the OP figured it out.

Replacing the starter is easy. And just ask for a starter for the year of the car and the H22 engine -- 4th gens had H22s as an option from '93 on.

Glad you got it.

I never figured starter... But the ole hammer trick and 'jumping' the solenoid are so old school it never crossed my mind as a solution.
