Please help motor problems

I don't know what it was but the motor crapped out on me yesterday on the cross island. No warning, just a big kick hesitation and then I pulled over and that was it shut her down and came back for her 7 hours later. Car had oil and everything. No clue what could have happened. Had to limp her home, wouldn't go above 40. Occasionally would sound like rod knock but then the noise would go away. Then she sounded like she was misfiring. And now after sitting she won't turn over but the battery isn't dead. Please any suggestions I'm supposed to start school Thursday and well this is my only car. It's a 1992 prelude Si h23a1 autotragic 151k miles.

Not trying to be lame here..seriously.
But it sounds like you need to find the bus route. It's quite possible you broke a timing belt or worse.

What do you mean not trying to sound lame here? And yea that's what I was starting to think. And lately things have been stressful so I'm not thinking quickly or clearly.

It still drive with a broken timing belt? Surely not...
But yeah this is the one case where I'll say catch a bus dude, unless you have any mechanic friends?

Re: Please help motor problems

A broken belt refers to a belt that doesn't keep the car in time. Whether it's shredded/shredding belt, tensionor or some other fiasco, and yes sometimes the car can keep going.

Guess I shoulda said "broken timing belt system"

Re: Please help motor problems

Ooops.

At the cost of coming across like bykfixer, Why on Gods Earth, would you not just get it towed? There is always an authorized tow truck on C.I.P., for 75-150$ you get your car SAFELY HOME. Timing belt , Spun Bearing, bent valves, are what you're looking for now.

I meant a new motor...

I wasn't trying to be an @$$ this time.
Really. I just wanted op to know he probably won't have his car running by Thursday...
Unless he has a friend with a shop and a spare engine laying around.

Hope I'm wrong 1996. But you described some things that usually don't have a happy ending.

Re: Please help motor problems

I know, in hind sight it was stupid. Though, I'm recovering from serious injuries and I don't have extra money laying around. And I wasn't trying to get it fixed by then more or less figure it out or get an idea what I'm getting into. Luckily family member is getting a company car soon and I can use there '06 altima to get to and from school because it's more practical than the train. And originally I only thought it was a misfire or bad spark plugs because I'm in need of new wires badly. So that's why I drove it. The car will probably sit and wait till I come up with the 2k for a motor and maybe even a 5spd swap. Unless it's not so bad to fix this car.

Re: Please help motor problems

Check your timing belt first. It may be ok.

Did you have any malfunction indicators like the cel or oil lamp?

Also check your plugs for fouling, your cap and rotor for white soot. If your belt looks ok check the usual suspects to know you have air, fuel, fire and fuel.

My sons car got all messed up once and it was a simple distributor swap and some fouled plugs replaced that got it in good shape.

Sounds like life winked at ya and a spare car is available. Cool. Focus on school, get that out of the way and the rest will take care of itself.

Check engine light would come on then go off. Now it's off. It wouldn't stay on for more then a few minutes.

Re: Please help motor problems

If the dash lights up when you turn the key to III, you should still be able to pull the CEL, which if you're lucky, MIGHT give you/us a clue as to what went wrong. I wouldn't hold your breathe tho.

x5626 on checking the timing belt if everything is in time correctly.

*Sigh* Your ECU stores the the CEL's until you clear them.

You gotta take the valve cover off to check the timing/belt.

Re: Please help motor problems

Tried taking over valve cover the center 10mm bolt just keeps spinning and won't come off or lift up. And the distributor cap all bolts are stripped. I'm a semi novice to working on cars so I don't really know what to do in situations like this. Plus I'm getting tired of the prelude curse. I get that they are old cars and have and require more care and finesse and at my age and budget maybe I'm not ready for this car.

Re: Please help motor problems

^^ hate to agree with ya 1996 but you are probably correct.. Sounds like you have a huge mess to tackle and this could be just the beginning...The car may be more than you can handle at this time. You and I neither are likely ready to ride a bucking bronco either. But the most difficult thing for most is admitting what you said. If more prelude owners were like you there may not be so many sitting under a tree, a tarp or worse...a junkyard.

Like I said, get your schooling underway and focus on that and other life events and work on the prelude as a hobby if/when you can.

Buy some vice grips if you don't have any. Those soft Honda screws strip real easy. Now as far as the valve cover bolt spinning, also try the vice grips to pull the stud out of the cylinder head.

Keep in touch.

Re: Please help motor problems

The car will not start of drive with a broken timing belt. If it jumped time, then yeah you gotta get that valve cover off, or if you can pry out the upper timing cover to see your cam gears you might can tell that way, too. I think you'd still need to be able to lift that side of the valve cover a least a little bit though.

You might have gotten lucky and just blew the ass outta the cat converter. If the cat is clogged up, the engine won't be able to push air through itself and it won't start, or if you can get it started it will run like crap until it blows out more of the cat's insides.

There's no scanner tool to check OBD1 - you have to pull a little clip out from behind the center console down by your feet - real easy to get to. There's a little yellow one and a little blue one- you need the blue one to check CEL codes. Once you have access to it you have to use a paperclip or something to jump it and do some key stuff from there.

I can't get **** to budge, I'm so stressed over this car. I can't take off the distributor cap, nor can I get the V/C off. And I'm afraid to mess with the CEL stuff because im not 100% sure what I'm doing.

Oh got the valve cover off also, timing belt seems fine no cracks nothing underside seems to not be worn. And it's tight. Fuel pump primes, and the main relay under the dash clicks when I turn the key, anyone have any other suggestions? Could it be distributor and spark plugs?

Re: Please help motor problems

Glad you got it.
Phew, glad your belt is intact.

1 vote for distrubtor. But first check your plugs for fouling from being oil covered, your rotor and cap for deposits. Plugs either work or they don't as a rule (enough to fire cylinders). But if not connected properly can give symptoms you describe. Check your coil for cracks.

Now for pix from your phone...this site is not a mobile site, so a few features have to be gotten around. I use photobucket to get around that for attaching photos. You copy and paste the "img" link.

When things settle down for ya read the faq section at the top of the screen. Explains a lot about the site.

Re: Please help motor problems

Ok now that you got the VC off, just make sure the timing components are all in time together. Get a 19mm socket and ratchet and turn the crank pulley bolt by hand COUNTER-clockwise (it'll help immensely to take all the plugs out) until the two arrows on both cam gears are pointing upwards. There should also be be lines on both cam gears 90* to the arrows, and the lines should point to each other/line up perfectly with the top of the head.

If nothing is lining up.... it skipped timing.

If it's all lined up, x3 on new dizzy/rotor/wires/plugs etc...

Re: Please help motor problems

Any help on where the crank pulley bolt is? I can't really find a diagram of the h23a1, to find it myself. This would be much easier if I knew what I was doing a little more. (That's what I'm going to school for though.) :)

^^ that dude.

I posted this pic in case you ever need to remove it...that's one way to do it...with a jackstand or other substantial item holding up the car in addition to that floor jack.

Re: Please help motor problems

There's 2 belts back there- The outside belt is the balancer belt, and the inside one is the timing belt.

If it is indeed the balancer belt that snapped, and the timing belt that skipped a couple teeth, there's still a chance you can salvage the motor, depending on how many teeth it skipped.

Follow the FSM to put the timing belt back into time with the cams and crank (you don't gotta worry about the balancer belt, it's not necessary), than try to start the engine. That's when it's time to cross your fingers, pray to whatever god it is you pray to, or any other superstitious actions that you prefer.

But if it is indeed the timing belt that snapped, well.... start looking for a new engine.

Re: Please help motor problems

It was the balancer belt and well the oil pump stopped working so the camshaft seized so the motor isn't really too salvageable. now time to partout and sadly move on. motor swap isnt in my budget.
