Knock Snesor Help

I have a 95 Si model prelude and a couple weeks ago got a CEL code 23 (Knock Sensor) but it only comes on every couple days. I had it put on a lift and disconnected the cable from the sensor and took it for a drive. The second I hit 60 MPH it tripped the CEL light and when I got back I checked the code and it again came up as code 23. Is this a bad sensor or is this something more serious? Any information is a big help and anything that can give me some peace of mind that I won't have to abandon my car. Thanks.

Thought I should add that at the time of the CEL's first time I was running regular unleaded but have switched to premium the last time I filled up.

Re: Knock Snesor Help

CEL for the knock sensor indicates it hears a noise.
It also indicates if it isn't getting a signal. Usually what happens in that case is it turns on the cel around 3500 rpm's. I guess in your case it was 60mph when it activates the lamp for 'no signal'.
Could be you had a bit of ping taking place from using low octane fuel but these cars usually adjust timing to prevent that ping from occuring.

These sensors are notorious for failing. So figure on buying a new one and when you install it use pipe thread tape to add a cushion between the sensor and block threads. This will lessen the chances that vibrations will cause the sensor to fail.

No need to abandon the car. That is unless you can actually hear your engine knocking. Don't buy a $15 one from ebay unless you don't mind changing it out 3-4 times a year. Parts geeks has some good ones for under $100 and oem for less than $200. I got one at advance for like $75 that's lasted about a year so far. When you see a new one you'll see why they fail so easily.

There are probably a million cars driving around with a cel on for knock sensor. It was several months before I got around to changing mine...maybe a year?

Re: Knock Snesor Help

Here is a life saver. If you have a junk yard near you go snag the connector for the knock sensor, The oem honda knock sensors are under 100 bucks for the 5th gen and read at the ohms. Thats what I did.
