Cluster Lights too dim

Hey all,
Been awhile since I posted, so I figured I was due for a thread..

I'll try my best to explain what happened the other night...
I started my Prelude the other day and heard almost a whining sound from the dash, then all of sudden my cluster lights went dim.
You all know how on the 4th gens ( maybe all of them i don't know) that little slider beside the steering wheel, where you slide it up and it clicks and everything goes brighter?
well mine clicks up but stays the same as before.
I circled the slider in my picture
see how the dash lights are bright, well now there not like that ;)
any help will be appreciated...

Re: Cluster Lights too dim

Nice cluster dash mod, are those extra gauges behind the plexiglass? Oil pressure and temp?

I want to say that it's your dimmer switch (the thing you circled), but if you're having the problem even when you have the headlights off it might not be so simple. Last I checked those switches were super-cheap so you might swap it just to be sure. The EL gauges have a ballast to drive a fluorescent tube, and the whining sound could have been a cap boiling off it's electrolyte and venting it though the safety release. If the rest of the dash control circuitry is in there, maybe that's the culprit.

On the topic of the dash light brightness, if I have my lights on during the day my fuel and temp gauges are almost unreadable. The problem isn't evident at night though. I'm just wondering if that is normal or it is a similar problem then the op is dealing with.

Re: Cluster Lights too dim

Mine did the same thing, the dial is a potentiometer and the clicker inside it must have broken, hence it not going to the brightest setting. I remember when mine broke. I don't know if there is a way to fix it without replacing it. I haven't tried yet, but I don't think it can be fixed, so I don't try it. Hard to see fuel and temp gauges during the day if the headlights are turned on. I think you need a new switch. Or just unplug it, and the dash lights will always be bright.
