HID's

i just purchased helio 8000k hid's for my 94 prelude (didnt arrive yet), then it occurred to me that maybe i should ask around if anyone has used them to see if there has been anyone with issues. first off this is going to sound stupid, are they any good, do they make a big difference, will i get pulled over in pennsylvania because of them? thank you.

Re: HID's

Waste of money. To the untrained eye, they're going to appear "brighter", when in reality they're actually putting out more glare, blinding oncoming traffic.

I second this. I have some 6000k and I like them just because of the look and price I paid. Honestly though, they put out about exactly the same as stock ones, just slightly different colored.

Ugh, this is why I haven't bought HIDs for my car yet, even though one of my housings has let water inside and no longer throws light very well. I was willing to spend decent money for a kit with projectors that would throw bright, white light with a proper cutoff like an OEM system, but all I can find are ricecy garbage quality ebay kits. I bumped into another prelude owner at a gas station with projectors I recognized from ebay. She didn't have HIDs installed though - just the regular halogens. She said the light output was so bad she had to use her high beams all the time at night, because she couldn't even tell the lows were on. If cops around here cared about anything but filling their speeding ticket quotas that would've gotten expensive real quick.

Re: HID's

Retro some TSX projector housings, then you'll be talking. or ebay some 300k for the rally look.

Re: HID's

Ddm tuning is better, and cheaper... At least that's what I've heard on here, everyone recomends them, $35 per kit straight from there site, add ons cost more obviously, but people swear by them

Re: HID's

There's a legitimate reason to why PIAA, RAYBRIG, and HELLA bulbs are $50-60.

any hid kit nowadays can perform for a year, or two, or longer. The problem is they aren't factory flawless at $35. And if you do not buy an additional set for swapping bad parts, well you're buying the reliable incandescent bulbs so you don't get a ticket.

Getting a 55w system will give you a better brightness with 4300k bulbs. And pony up the dough for a slim ballast. This isn't 1981 with the metal lunchbox fill with transistors and vacuum tube bulbs.

I'm not interested in a fabrication project. Turning wrenches I'm good at. Baking headlights to soften glue, cutting plastic freehand, mounting projector assemblies and having to eyeball them and hope they're aimed right... it'll be a disaster.

I was talking about projectors, not bulbs. I don't know much about bulbs/ballasts other than that they're everywhere, always getting cheaper, and the really cheap stuff is always crap. It sounds like you have HID bulbs in a halogen reflector housing - a hearty "**** You" to everyone in the oncoming traffic lane.

Re: HID's

Just going with what I've heard, ddm which is $35 a set base price, is pretty good quality and durabilitywise...

Re: HID's

Ebay slim 35w digital ballast, and go for the dark grey type. They don't even flicker on ignition. There are also slim chrome looking ones, but they're a crapshoot, 2/4 I bought were good.

I have had good luck without DDM, but will go OEM denso ballast the next time. HID Planet is the site to go everything lighting. Just wow.

Re: HID's

DDM tuning is what I had with my car. I payed 55 for the higher wattage ballasts (still slim) with 6k HID. worked extremely well.
