dash light flicker and over heating. alternator problem?

here we go again so not long ago my battery kept dying and it kept testing good so i swapped it out with a spare alternator i had laying around and the problem stopped but then i started getting that squreeeeeeeeech when i would start the car when it was cold. i did some trouble shooting but never solved the problem and like 3 days later i was out of town and it was getting dark so my lights where on then my 4WS light started turning on and off *with no pattern so not like it was giving me codes* and my gauges would die and come back randomly and my car started over heating like crazy.

so i got to my destination parked the car and when i left i noticed it wasnt just my interior lights my headlights where doing the same crazy dimming while i was driving so i parked it at a walgreens and got a ride home so that i wouldnt have to drive with the lights on.

today while i drove home the 4WS light flashed again like 3 times and again the gauges would die with it. the car started over heating when i hit traffic with my heater on full blast and i never came to a complete stop. when i got home i noticed that my back wheels where in fact working and i popped the hood my fans where on while it started to over heat but they seemed really weak.

sorry for the story but thats what happen. im full on coolant fans work properly. i think my 2nd alternator is also going bad but the car stays on when i remove the battery. i thought it was my light switch at first but it happens with them off. i also think that the 4WS was kicking on and the turning off of the light may have been too much juice so the dash would die somehow as it happened? can a bad alternator cause my car to overheat some how? im wondering if its all related some how.
