headlights/alternator

Being that ive never owned one of these preludes, nor have I encou tered this problem with othercars I have a question:

1. When you turn on your headlights, which headlights should light up! All four, or just the outside beams. When I turn on my headlights all four come on and somehoe the highbeams are in the outer headlight beams

2. With all that being said when I turn my headlights on fully, it seems to draw power. Its not terrible noe because I changed the battery and rebuilt the alternator so it doesnt do it as much, when I just turn on the parking lights it doesnt draw power

Re: headlights/alternator

outside ones are normal lights from memory, inside are highbeams.

Id be checking the grounding of some of the headlight wiring. when you use the high beam stalk to switch to high beams, does it click?

Re: headlights/alternator

Sigh... GM all lights on highbeam kit. Remove it for normal settings. The alternator drain will stop too.

Sometimes sideswipe forgets he's digital and the rest of us are analog.
He's the dennis miller of prelude forums. About 35% of what he says is over our heads... ie by far the smartest guy in the room

Re: headlights/alternator

Well that's the problem mike, from the factory, the 105 amp alternator and standard battery would drain like nobody's business cause you have the:

lows@ 55w
highs@ 65w.+
----------------
105 watt draw, which that asthmatic amp can't handle. Sooo they shut a set off.
But the truckers already swap out the alternator for beefy units and then put 2nd batteries so it doesn't affect them.

The stock prelude alternator is 90amps and the battery is about 450-500 amps.

As far as the smartest guy in the room? Nah, just what I do know i'll chime in on.
Op, you will be looking for a tabbed relay that doesn't look like it belongs behing the head light assembly, it'll be easier to trace from the bulb covers...

There should only be a pair of wires coming from each set (4 in total)
If you have 6-8 wires total, there is your culprit...
Now if you want to keep it, get a better alternator. If not, remove it.
