5th Gear Pop out

So yesterday and today I've began experiencing something I never have before in my car. 5th gear has began popping out randomly. Yesterday it was only once on the way to work, about half way through my commute. Never did it again all day, even on way home. Today, it happened once about half way there. and then it did it two times in succession as soon as I put it back in 5th about 3/4 of the way to work. Now I've done some research and things I've found are 1.) 5th gear synchro 2.) low transmission fluid 3.) broken tranny mount 4.) Cable linkage 5.) shift fork. Details that may or not be important: The last two days it happened I was late for work, and had to leave on a cold start (and it didn't happen on way home later in the day when it was warmer out and car had been warmed up). Also, when I replaced my axles I put in 10W-30 motor oil as suggested and not Honda MTF or GM synchromesh this was only 2-3 months ago at tops. I have no problems shifting into any gear, no griding or anything like that, it's just randomly popping out of 5th these last two days. I think my first step is going to be checking the fluid level, and replacing with GM synchromesh. To see if that fixes it. I've also read on someones accord, that their axles had popped out of the tranny side and it was leaking there, so I'll be double checking that. Does anyone else have anything else I should be checking for? Or personal experiece?

Re: 5th Gear Pop out

check your trans fluid level. if it's at the proper level and the problem persists, all signs point to bad synchro

Re: 5th Gear Pop out

Thought all was good on way to work today, let it warm up to full temp before leaving. Got just about to work and popped out of 5th twice. Put back in and could feel the vibration wanting to pop it back out again. Seems to be only from 55+ and under load such as on any kind of incline. I do think it's the synchro.. Haven't yet got to check fluid level but will be doing that. Looks like a tranny rebuild this winter, and an engine rebuild too. Or maybe an Hmotors H22A.. I drive my truck during the winter anyways, but still pretty sucky.

Re: 5th Gear Pop out

going to be honest here... I had the same stupid problem. mine was a lot more common though. it was popping out on acceleration and hills ( literally had to hold it in 5th with my hand). I figured out why one day when I was just messing around in my car the cables were good and everything checked out. but my car having had almost 300ks on it and having gotten it for a pukey kid who had no clue. I decided to check the oil level and realized the preludes (93 SI) from all I know don't have a trans dipstick. but you fill it till it leaks out the side. never the less I unscrewed it and out came about 5 drops of fluid. I laughed and said worth filling it up see if that helps. preludes can use 10w 30 engine oil for trans fluid( works fine with me) or you can use Honda MTF fluid. to be honest my dad worked at Honda and said its the same stuff with different colors. anyway that was the problem and it seemed to solve it. never happened again made it shift really smooth again. its worth a try to change the fluid. I know it sounds stupid but that's probably it.

Hope that helps. thousand dollar trans fix or a 20 dollar bottle of fluid. meh I think id go with 20 lol
